The third in Sue Grafton's series of Alphabet mystery novels, suceeding "A" Is for Alibi" and "B Is for Burglar". The series was left incomplete, with "Y Is for Yesterday" being published in 2017. Grafton intended to write a Z novel, but she died before she was able to do so.

Drawn and printed at the War Office, 1916, revised to Augst. 1918. Colour-printed map folding and linen-backed (c. 60 x 71 cm); very clean and fresh. The map covers stretches of the Hejaz Railway in the east.

1825. Winchester: James Robbins, [1825]. Small-folio (c. 300 x 200 mm), pp. 9, printed on vellum; a little spotted in places, marginal traces of humidity; loose and disbound. Extremely rare, with only one further copy recorded, at Hampshire Archives. This prison record, actually not a calendar at all, lists 41 named convicts with their age, crime and sentence on pages two to four, followed by death sentences (40 in all), offences under the revenue law, and convictions for various crimes, such as ‘unlawfully cutting Timber without the consent of its Owner’. The final four pages are taken up by name, age, crime and sentence of 136 prisoners in the County Bridewell. Sarah Russen, aged 36, e.g. had been imprisoned for a year for ‘being a lewd woman’; ‘being a rogue and vagabond’ could result in three months. First edition, apparently the first book on California to contain colour plates. This book exists in a variety of states with regard to the number of illustrations; the plates, excluding the additional engraved title vary in number from zero to six and may or may not include a map. Edinburgh, John Grant, 1915. 8vo. Original maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pp. xix, 633, [3, advertisements], three colour-printed folding maps; a very good copy. New and revised edition of a rare classic, first published in 1883. Sir William Muir (1819–1905) was an administrator in India, and Islamicist of Glaswegian origin, as well as head of the intelligence department inside Agra Fort during the 1857 'Mutiny'. After his Indian service Muir became principal of Edinburgh University. 'The Muir Institute, where oriental languages are still taught, commemorates the encouragement given by the Muir brothers, through the endowment of chairs and prizes, to the study of these languages in Edinburgh University' (ibid.). - See Avril Ann Powell, Scottish Orientalists and India: The Muir Brothers, Religion, Education and Empire, (2010). This new edition had become necessary as British involvement in the Middle East and on the Gulf seemed inevitable in 1915.

First edition. This very rare work contains chapters on missionary work in China, Japan, the Philippines, and Porto Rico. In respect to China the author analyzes the rapid change in Chinese society. The missionaries had arrived when the Chinese Revolution against the Qing Dynasty of 1911 had broken out, and Sun Yat-Sen led parts of the Chinese society into a civil war.

First edition, first issue of Burton's magisterial commentary of the life and work of Camões, the creator of the Portuguese national epos. What attracted Burton apart from his philological erudition were Camões' involvement in the expansion of the Portuguese Empire and the frankness of some of the suppressed verses. This rare work was published one year after Burton's translation of the Lusiads. On pages 709 to 727 is Isabel Burton's The Reviewer Reviewed: A Postscript. Casada 76; Penzer p. 104.

Vandeleur's accounts of his military experiences in Uganda on the Upper Nile, notably against the Arab slave station in Southern Unyoro, and of his various expeditions on the Niger and the Nile. He also offers descriptions along the way of the people and country through which he passes, i.e. introducing British rule by force.

First thus, strictly the second edition, and the first to be issued with coloured plates. The majority of the first printing of this Peake classic was destroyed in a bombing raid during World War II. At the end of the war Peake reissued his pirate story in this superior edition with the drawings printed on coloured stock.

This is the biography of one of the most important figures in the Amerian women's suffrage movement. Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947) succeeded Susan B. Anthony as the head of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1900. She developed a two-prong campaign which came to be known as Mrs. Catt’s “Winning Plan” and which sought passage of a federal suffrage amendment while continuing to push for winning suffrage for women on a state level. This is the general map of Switzerland from the Meyer-Weiss Atlas, the first Swiss cartographic work produced along rigorous scientific guidelines. 'The Atlas Suisse (1796-1802) compiled by Johann Rudolf Meyer, Johann Heinrich Weiss and Joachim Eugen Müller is one of the precursors of modern cartography in Switzerland' (University of Bern, online).
