Description:
London: Printed for A. Millar 1748, 1748. First edition. 4to (255x195mm). pp. [i], 81, [1]. The advertisement final leaf is present which also gives a list and explanation of the obsolete words used in the poem. Book label of George Rylands. Rebound in 20th century by Gray of Cambridge in grey paper covered boards, with an attractive printed paper label on upper cover. Final leaf of poem has upper corner torn, with loss to heading and a tear on the title page has been repaired with tape to its verso. Title-page and final page soiled, otherwise a very good copy. James Thomson is best known now for The Seasons but this poem, published in the last year of his life, which sought to praise the virtues of hard work over the "false luxury" of indolence, revivified the Spenserian stanza form and influenced the Romantic poets of the early 19th century.

Paris: Chez Leviez 1770, 1770. Complete set of six crayon manner engravings made from designs from Jean Pillement and engraved by Louis Gautier-Dagoty (two signed plates) and Arnaud-Eloi Gautier-Dagoty (four unsigned plates). Printed in black and red with an additional suite in the variant state printed in black, the set comprises a total of twelve plates including the two title pages (250x180mm). The engravings are trimmed close to the plate mark and pasted onto blank leaves (292x225mm). Slightly soiled in places and some staining to the monochrome prints but this is a lovely set, in very good condition, of a scarce collection of Rococo designs by one of the leading artists and designers working in the style. Worldcat records no copies. We have located only two complete sets at the Getty and the Ackland Museum at the UNC, Chapel Hill. Nineteenth century mottled calf, gilt borders to covers, spine with five raised bands and gilt decoration in the compartments with red morocco label lettered in… Read More

Description:
London: C and J Ollier 1821. Second edition. pp. xvii (but xv), 104. Lacking half title. The original book has been disbound and the pages cut, very neatly and expertly and then carefully pasted at the hinge edge on a leaf of plain white paper so that the leaves of text are interleaved with the plain leaves. This is one way in which prompt books were made, allowing for notes and directions to be written on the plain leaves without disturbing the text. The leaves of text are cut to measure 151x95mm and the plain paper is 235x190mm. Bound in contemporary tan half calf, marbled paper covered boards. Rebacked with spine lettered in gilt. The centre of the upper and lower covers has a circular morocco label stamped in gilt with a coat of arms around which, in a circular band is stamped in gilt in gothic lettering, Johannes Ludovicus Gautier. Apart from some scuffing to the boards and bumping to the corners, the binding is in very good condition. Internally it is in fine condition with a little marking to… Read More

Description:
1971, 1971. Eight telegrams from Curt Claudio in America to John Lennon at Tittenhurst Park, Ascot. The telegrams are pasted as a group onto red card and framed. Most are in good condition although two are water stained and two others have some staining to the edges but all eight are clear and legible. They are part of a strange and fascinating story. In May 1971, a young man from California was found in the grounds of John Lennon's house, Tittenhurst Park, Ascot. His name was Curt Claudio and he had been sleeping in the garden for a few days. Before flying to England, he had sent numerous letters and telegrams to Lennon. He felt that he had a special connection to Lennon and the Beatles and that Lennon's songs were intentionally directed at him. He was obsessed with Lennon. These telegrams sent in the weeks and months before Claudio's appearance in Ascot are addressed variously to Tittenhurst, Tippenhurst and Pittenhurst and Claudio's address is given as 300 Coelho St,… Read More

Rome: Typis Hæredum Corbelletti 1650, 1650. First edition. 4to. 237x180mm. ff. [40]. Engraved title page and nineteen engraved portraits. Contemporary limp vellum, small hole to bottom edge of upper cover and a very small hole to foot of spine and some slight soiling but otherwise in very good condition. Front pastedown has the bookplate of Sloley Hall in Norfolk. Internally, there is some staining, quite heavy in places but overall a very attractive copy of a rare book: a nice example of an attractively printed Italian seventeenth century book with particularly good and striking illustrations. The engravings are unattributed and we have been unable to discover the artist. The British Museum, which has copies of these engravings from a later edition, simply state that the artist is anonymous. A pity as they are fine portraits. USTC records only thirteen copies of which ten are in Italy. Rare in commerce, we have been unable to trace any copies appearing at auction records. Ferdinando Ughelli… Read More
