Kent,: Blackheath Hill, , [c1820s-1830s].. 75 by 50mm (3 by 2 inches).. Prints,""Ladies Saddles on an Improved Plan. S is for Saddler Engraved trade card. Trade card of Charles Kemball, manufacturer and merchant of sadldlers, harness and other equestrian accessories. The most remarkable thing about the card is that it advertises """"Ladies Saddles on an Improved Plan"""", illustrated by an engraving that appears to show a woman riding astride, rather than side-saddle. During the early nineteenth century, it was still considered uncouth and undignified for a woman to ride astride, although many undoubtedly did so, particularly for more intense equestrian activities. It does not appear that Kemball ever took out a patent for his """"improved plan"""", however, nor is any innovation in design recorded to have come from him. In fact, The London Gazette of 1833 announced """"a Meeting of the Creditors of Charles Kemball Steven (sued as Charles Stevens), late of Blackheath-Hill, in the County of Kent,… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam,: Jacobus Robyn met Privilegio Voor is Iaaren A'o, 1687.. 430 by 535mm (17 by 21 inches).. First state. Double-page engraved chart, with fine hand-colour in part and in outline. Large-scale sea chart of the Carolina coast - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'. In 1687 Robijn replaced the earlier chart of the south-east with this one. It is interestingly derived from Johannes van Keulen's 'Pas Kaart Van de Kust van Carolina,' 1684, the publisher whom he had been working with in 1679. Robijn rotates the projection to a north-south one and in the process eliminates the south portion of Chesapeake Bay. The coastline is virtually identical but nomenclature does vary. One notable new addition is B de S. Anna and a sand bar is also placed at C Faire. The position of Charles Town is still on the south bank of the Rio Grande, a position from which it relocated in 1680. Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West… Read More

Shanghai,: The Globe Advertising Agency,, 1930s.. 381 by 355mm. (15 by 14 inches).. Lithograph folding map. A rare plan showing the central district in the French Settlement in Shanghai, published in 1930s, as a guide for the Allied Armed Forces. Important and entertaining land marks including department stores, banks, apartments, hotels and churches are represented pictorially on the map, these are also numbered, which are listed on the reverse of the map. The plan prominently depicts the most popular streets in Shanghai in 1930s. Bubbling Well Road (now West Nanjing Road) shown in the upper section was incorporated into the Settlement in 1899. In 1919 it was the 'prettiest road in Shanghai'. Early residents of what became the International Settlement used to walk out for recreation along Bubbling Well Road to the Jing'an Temple. A department store named Sun Sun Co. Ltd advertised in the centre below the map is situated on this road. Avenue Joffre (now Huaihai Road) was mostly lined with large… Read More

B is for Bread and Biscuit Baker Engraved trade card. Trade card for another proprietor of the Old Chelsea Bun House, in this case Edward Chapman. Chapman is listed in various documents as proprietor of the Chelsea Bun House between 1824 and 1836; presumably he worked alongside or on behalf of the final member of the original Hand family. To judge by the list of baked goods provided on the present trade card, the Bun House offered far more than its signature delicacy. [London],: H. Colburn, 13 Grt. Marlborough Street,, 1845. 388 by 412mm (15.25 by 16.25 inches).. Lithograph map with original hand-colour in outline, with one inset map, manuscript pencil inscription to margin. A rare map showing the Canton region, including Hong Kong Island, Lantau and Macao. In 1839, William Hutcheon Hall obtained command of an East Indiaman called the Nemesis, on board which he served in the First Anglo-Chinese War. The ship's first engagement was in the Second Battle of Chuenpi in early 1841, which resulted in a resounding British victory. Along with his other naval achievements, this triumph won the captain the nickname of 'Nemesis Hall' and he was promoted to the rank of Captain at the end of the war in 1842, when Hong Kong was ceded to Britain. Hall kept copious notes about his experiences in China, which were later used by Oxford graduate William Dallas Bernard to write an account of the war, entitled 'Narrative of the Voyages and Services of the Nemesis from 1840 to 1843'… Read More

Description:
[London,, c1815].. 130 by 97mm. (5 by 3.75 inches).. Engraved caricature map mounted on card, original full wash colour. This humorous map is part of the series of cartographic caricatures - including England and Wales, as here, Scotland, and Ireland - which Robert Deighton first produced in the late eighteenth century. England and Wales are depicted as John Bull with full tankard of beer in hand and riding a monstrous fish. The map like much of Dighton's caricatures would be published as a print by Carrington Bowles (fl.1752-1793). Carington Bowles worked initially with his father, John Bowles, before leaving to take over his uncle Thomas Bowles (II)'s business, circa 1762. Carington Bowles was one of the most active mapsellers and publishers of his day in London. His business was continued by his some Henry Carington Bowles who, in partnership with Samuel Carver, continued to publish maps and prints well into the nineteenth century.

Description:
[Venice,: Giovanni Battista Albrizzi,, 1734].. 280 by 357mm. (11 by 14 inches).. Engraved map. The first state of the map, published in the second volume of the Italian translation of Thomas Salmon's 'Modern History…or, the present State of all Nations', 'Lo Stato Presente Di Tutti Paesi E Popoli Del Mondo', 1734. A copy of Tirion's version of Kaempfer's map, probably engraved by Giuseppe Filosi (fl1732-1757), with only the title and the names of the seas and major features changed into Italian. Albrizzi (1698-1777) began to publish Salmon's work in 1731, when he issued volume one. The second volume "containing the map of Japan was published only in 1734. By 1738, the popularity of the work forced him into publishing a second edition, probably having exhausted the initial volumes. He continued to add volumes up to a least 1762, by which time he had issued a volume 26" (Hubbard). The map retains Tirion's mistakes and has inadvertently joined 'Jesso of Jesogasima' – Hokkaido – with 'Kamtzchata'… Read More

Madrid,: Juan Lopez,, 1783.. 340 by 820mm. (13.5 by 32.25 inches).. Printed map with hand colour on three sheets, joined Map of Cuba by Juan Lopez (1765-1830), the son of the famous Spanish cartographer Tomas Lopez. Cuba was one of Spain's most important territories in the West Indies, providing a crucial base for the slave and bullion trade. The British held the island for just under a year during the Seven Years War, before returning the island to Spain in the Treaty of Paris in return for Florida. Whereas the economy of most colonies was built on slaves and the production of raw materials, Cuba's economy was urbanised and supported the empire. Tomas Lopez de Vargas Machuca (1731-1802) was a Spanish publisher and the leading cartographer of the age. He studied with Jean-Baptiste Bouguignon d'Anville in Paris, before returning to his native Madrid in 1760, when he established the only independent cartographic publishing house in Spain in 1760. He began making maps for the Bourbon kings and became… Read More

[Florence,: Francesco Onofri,, 1646].. 455 by 370mm (18 by 14.5 inches).. Engraved map. First state, of the first edition of the second of two general charts relating to North America by Dudley, found in the second volume of the 'Arcano de Mare', one the "greatest atlases of the world" (Wardington). First published in 1646 when its author, Robert Dudley, was 73, it was not only the first sea atlas of the world, but also the first to use Mercator's projection; the earliest to show magnetic deviation; the first to show currents and prevailing winds; the first to expound the advantages of 'Great Circle Sailing' the shortest distance between two points on a globe; and "perhaps less importantly, the first sea-atlas to be compiled by an Englishman, albeit abroad in Italy" (Wardington). The map covers most of the east coast of North America from Florida up to Labrador in Canada. It is mainly taken from Dudley's manuscript, and is the first printed sea chart of this coast by an Englishman, and the first… Read More

Description:
[Florence,, 1661].. 460 by 370mm (18 by 14.5 inches).. Engraved chart. A fine example with a strong impression of this elegantly engraved chart, the earliest to focus on the southernmost part of the coast of China that includes Hong Kong and Macao; the chart also includes the northern coast of Vietnam. The city of Canton (Guangzhou) is shown, as is the mouth of the Pearl River; Hainan Island appears in a somewhat distorted form; and a large lake feeds a "R. De Cocincina". The chart appeared in the Arcano del Mare, a landmark of nautical cartography that was the first to use the Mercator Projection in a sea atlas, also the first to show prevailing winds and currents in the main harbors and anchorages, and the first to give magnetic declination. Thus, Dudley's was the first nautical atlas with worldwide coverage that could actually be used for navigation. In their visual character, Dudley's charts are utterly unique and are especially notable for their ornate calligraphic lettering and understated but… Read More

A map of Japan and Korea, showing the towns, rivers, mountains, islands and other major features of each, following the d'Anville map of 1732, by Louis Brion de la Tour (fl.1756-1803), a French geographer. Much of his work was done in partnership with Louis Charles Desnos, who was bookseller and geographical engineer for globes to the Danish Crown. Paris,: Jean-Dominique Cassini,, 1787.. 557 by 567mm. (22 by 22.25 inches).. Engraved map. The first state of Cassini IV's reissue of his great-grandfather's rare and "elegant" lunar map. Jean-Dominique Cassini, known as Cassini IV (1748-1845), was born at the observatory in Paris which his great-grandfather, also called Jean-Dominique Cassini (1625-1712), had founded. The elder Cassini was born in Liguria, and studied at the Panzano Observatory under Giovanni Battista Riccioli and Francesco Maria Grimaldi. In 1669, he moved to France on the invitation of Colbert to help set up and become the first director of the new Paris Observatory. Cassini ordered a 34-foot telescope from the great instrument maker Giuseppe Campani for the new observatory, which would prove to be crucial in the creation of his lunar map. Cassini made approximately 60 drawings of the moon between 1671 and 1679, with the assistance of the artists Sebastien Leclerc and Jean Patigny. The observations took place, when possible,… Read More

The second state of the map, first published in a German edition in 1753, then published as here in a later French edition, 'Histoire Universelle, Depuis Le Commencement du Monde, Jusqu'a Present; Traduite de L'Anglois', 1763, of Prévost's version of Thomas Astley's 'A New General Collection of Voyages and Travels', 1745, which eventually extended to 20 volumes and was published many times, over many years, and in many languages. The second state of the map is identifiable by the reference "Tom.XX Pag.411" at the upper right corner.
