London: Published by P. & D. Colnaghi, for the Author, 1934. Fine. Lionel Lindsay, the famous Australian artist and critic, greatly admired Keene, the illustrator and humorous artist best known for his drawings for Punch. Lindsay believed Keene was "a truly original character...he presents us with the unparalleled paradox of the most serious artist of his time - in all that pertained to his art - devoting his genius to the service of humour...". Tipped-in are two autograph letters from Lionel Lindsay to the Australian collector Harry Chaplin. Tipped-in also is an undated autograph letter by Keene himself with a sketch and a fragment of another autograph piece. First edition, and very scarce: only 130 copies were printed, all numbered and signed by the author. Folio, original quarter cloth, frontispiece portrait and 55 fine collotype plates, each with tissue guard. Aside from a little shelfwear, this is a fine bright copy, uncut in the original binding with a slightly torn and stained dust-jacket.

A collection of dark and moody Parisian scenes by master French printmaker, Charles Meryon (1821 -1868) paired with an accomplished essay by the curator of prints of prints and drawing at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Martin Hardie. Limited edition - this is number 422 of 500 - printed at The Baynard Press. Small quarto, 80 pages, introductory text followed by 22 plates in collotype, quarter bound cloth, original printed papered boards, some rubbing to spine, occasional spotting, a very good copy.

George Redway: London, 1896. THOMPSON, Hugh. Reprinted from the original edition of 1735, with the addition of a memoir of the author by R. Farquharson Sharp. The spine and cover boards have been beautifully illustrated in gold and Thompson's delightful vignettes appear throughout. Small quarto, original gilt decorated cloth, delightful illustrations and vignettes by Hugh Thompson throughout, a very good copy.

Denmark, 1880. Very good. Charming children's exercise book with engraved illustrated covers depicting a group of five kangaroos titled "Kaempekaenguru". This idyllic bushland scene, complete with a joey and its mother and two emus in the distance, comprises the entire rear cover of the booklet (a serene contrast to the front cover depicting a group of hyenas fighting over a kill). Both engraved covers are signed "F. Specht"; Friedrich Specht (1839-1909) was a German natural history illustrator who produced images for both popular and scientific publications. Slim lined booklet, writing exercises completed in a cursive hand, original decorated wrapperss, very good.

A celebration of the Australian Christmas with illustrations by one of the founding members of the Heidelberg School, Walter Withers. Issued as a souvenir by the Post and Telegraph Departments, this charming work includes many portraits of the government officers, together with depictions of their offices ranging from the Sydney General Post Office to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station. It is further illustrated by many 'picture postcard' views of Australian and New Zealand cities and landscapes. This is the only recorded publication by the artists, Fred Kneebone and Ernest Ferris, but all three artists have almost equal shares in the production. United States of America: International Cocktail, Wine and Spirits Digest, Inc, 1948. As 'Maitre de Bar' at New York's Hotel Pierre in the 1940s, Oscar Haimo poured drinks for the best known celebrities of his time. Oscar Haimo self-published his 'Cocktail and Wine Digest'- in the drinks trade, it was known as the 'barman's bible'. Haimo wrote from his private notes and included his own poems & drawings, and interesting blue-tinted photographic plates of people and places in NYC. About himself, Haimo said "the greatest thing in this mixologist's life is the 'cocktail par excellence'"-- perhaps referring to his prize-winning 'MacArthur' cocktail (lime juice, Triple Sec, Rum & Jamaican Rum, a dash of egg white, shaken well).
