Description:
London: Cassell & Co, 1900. Small octavo, red cloth wrappers, in lovely original condition, some wear. With chapters on Australian meat and homemade wine. 'The age in which we live is essentially one of progress, and in no branch of the fine arts is progress more marked than in the art of cookery... The secret of good cooking is economy, in the highest sense of the word. The good cook will extract all the goodness and utilise all the materials at his or her disposal, whereas the inferior and bad cook, through ignorance, commit the crime of waste. We must remember that when we waste food, we in one sense rob the poor... The present work has been written on the basis of the maxim that economy and simplicity are not incompatible with excellence and elegance. We have also, in compiling it, borne in mind that there is an increasingly large class of persons who, without being vegetarians, consume a greater amount of vegetable and farinaceous food than was customary years back. Those persons will find… Read More

Description:
London: Published by P. & D. Colnaghi, for the Author, 1934. Fine. Lionel Lindsay, the famous Australian artist and critic, greatly admired Keene, the illustrator and humorous artist best known for his drawings for Punch. Lindsay believed Keene was "a truly original character...he presents us with the unparalleled paradox of the most serious artist of his time - in all that pertained to his art - devoting his genius to the service of humour...". Tipped-in are two autograph letters from Lionel Lindsay to the Australian collector Harry Chaplin. Tipped-in also is an undated autograph letter by Keene himself with a sketch and a fragment of another autograph piece. First edition, and very scarce: only 130 copies were printed, all numbered and signed by the author. Folio, original quarter cloth, frontispiece portrait and 55 fine collotype plates, each with tissue guard. Aside from a little shelfwear, this is a fine bright copy, uncut in the original binding with a slightly torn and stained dust-jacket.

Description:
1850. Remarkable album of original watercolours celebrating the life- world of the literati. The album forms an intriguing catalogue of traditional Chinese scholarly objects including Buddhist statues, vases, wrist-rests, musical instruments, scholar-stones, hand scrolls, miniature ornamental trees and tray landscapes. While similar albums of watercolours illustrating costumes, punishments, trades, and natural beauties are sometimes encountered, such an album dedicated to objects of scholarship and meditation is a rare and special find. In Confucian philosophy, the literati enjoyed a highly-esteemed role, cultivating detachment from the day-to-day bustle of worldly affairs to achieve sanguine and lucid intellectual insight. This album lovingly captures the cherished objects of classical Chinese scholarship, and so offers a rare insight into this bygone way of life. Mid-nineteenth century album bearing woodblock title stamp ‘Chinese House Ornaments', containing twelve original… Read More

Description:
Melbourne & Sydney: Tatchell, Garritty & Dobson, 1892. First Edition. Walter Withers, Ernest Ferris, Fred Kneebone, and John Clemens. A celebration of the Australian Christmas with illustrations by one of the founding members of the Heidelberg School, Walter Withers. Issued as a souvenir by the Post and Telegraph Departments, this charming work includes many portraits of the government officers, together with depictions of their offices ranging from the Sydney General Post Office to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station. It is further illustrated by many 'picture postcard' views of Australian and New Zealand cities and landscapes. This is the only recorded publication by the artists, Fred Kneebone and Ernest Ferris, but all three artists have almost equal shares in the production. Walter Withers first arrived in Melbourne in 1883 but did not settle there until 1888, opening his Melbourne studio in 1891. Produced when Australia began to suffer deeply from the depression of the 1890s, the artists would… Read More

Description:
United States of America: International Cocktail, Wine and Spirits Digest, Inc, 1948. As 'Maitre de Bar' at New York's Hotel Pierre in the 1940s, Oscar Haimo poured drinks for the best known celebrities of his time. Oscar Haimo self-published his 'Cocktail and Wine Digest'- in the drinks trade, it was known as the 'barman's bible'. Haimo wrote from his private notes and included his own poems & drawings, and interesting blue-tinted photographic plates of people and places in NYC. About himself, Haimo said "the greatest thing in this mixologist's life is the 'cocktail par excellence'"-- perhaps referring to his prize-winning 'MacArthur' cocktail (lime juice, Triple Sec, Rum & Jamaican Rum, a dash of egg white, shaken well). Gossip-columnist Walter Winchell described this drink "as zingy as its name". Haimo indexed his cocktails A-Z. His categories include Fizzes/ Flips/ Punches/ Rickeys/ Shrubs/ Slings/ Smashes/ Sours/ Swizzles/ Toddies.  "Cocktails and Wine Digest' is an engaging and handsome… Read More
