With one etching in frontispiece, loose as issued, with inverted signature and date Picasso 23.D.43. A collection of 25 poems by Robert Desnos, illustrated with 23 reproductions of different parts of the etching to unveiling to the reader, page after page, the different aspects of the frontispiece. The etching depicts a seated figure on both sides, front and back, with millions of fine lines supporting the figure, the drawing acquires volume and intricacy, and questions our sense of perception of the whole piece. The poems of the collection are highly militant, alluding to the occupation and imminent liberation; Desnos was arrested by Gestapo in February 1944, before the publication of the book, and died 15 months later.
