A rare book, not mentioned in Edward Joy's Pictorial Dictionary of British 19 Century Furniture Design but included in Blackie's Cabinet Maker's Assistant. No copy of the first edition is cited by OCLC. Thompson includes designs for upholstered pieces, beds, door panels, and ornamental details. Many of these designs reflect furniture seen during the author's 1851 visit to Paris. Boar slightly rubbed; sporadic foxing, still a very desirable copy.

A comprehensive Victorian design book "for use of upholsterers, cabinet-makers, decorators, carvers, gilders, and others also illustrating early examples of Aesthetic Movement designs. Sympathetica rebacked using the original spine as an overlay. Minor wear to tips of board else very good.

The style incorporated American colonial design with French and European tast and was heavily influenced by Desire Gulimard's French pattern books. The amalgam of tastes was largely created by Joseph Bonaparte (the elder brother Napoleon) constructing a magnificent house, Point Breeze, twenty-five miles north of Philadelphia. The Sadler Company were manufacturers of post office outfits, cabinets, lock boxes, rubber stamps and supplies. This catalogue features numerous examples of their post office loc boxes (with either a key or combination lock) each illustrated with dimension features anf prices which can be installed in any post office and adapted to layout. One of the pages is headed: "The government ordered our cabinet for Island Possessions." Back wrapper is printed order form. Very good.

This is the first major biography of this important, though often overshadowe nineteenth century American architect, planner, and landscape designer. Vaux collaborated with Fredrick Law Olmstead on New York's Central Park and Brooklyn's Prospect Park, as well as the first comprehensive city-wide park, parkway and open space system in the United States, designed in 1868 for Buffalo, New York. On his own Vaux designed the first building for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History. This comprehensive narrative of his work is well-illustrated with photographs, pla and drawings.

Tilden" possibly by the author? Could this be the same A[lphonzo] F. Tilden was manager of the Esmeralda Silver & Copper Mining Corporation in Arizona, 1864-1865? Nearly fine.
