Description:
London: Cassell and Company, 1894. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Volume FOUR only of a five volume series. This volume contains 36 black and white portraits accompanied by a brief, adulatory biographical piece. Subjects are drawn from many spheres of British society and culture, with an emphasis on royalty, the aristocracy, the stage, and the arts. Among those included are Prince Henry of Battenberg, Henry Irving, George Bernard Shaw, the King of Greece, Sir Edwin Arnold, Lady Randolph Churchill, and the Duke and Duchess of York and Bridesmaids. This is an ex-library volume with the bookplate of the City of York Public Library affixed to the front pastedown. In what was probably an effort to discourage readers from taking photographs, the library applied an unobtrusive but visible embossed stamp to the margins of the photos, not affecting the portrait itself. Despite these factors the photographs are still interesting and attractive. Bound in brown cloth with floral borders to front boards and…

Description:
Philadelphia: Catholic Standard and Times, 1987. Paperback. Fine. Paperback. "Mother Katharine Drexel is America's most famous nun for she seared the country's conscience on the problems of racism before equal rights was a coined expression. A stunning debutante, charismatic, a generous millionaire, she was a woman of towering idealism who worked selflessly for social justice but she was also a woman torn apart by the flaming injustices of the society in which she lived. A comprehensive, informative, compelling look at the struggles of a great woman in a pathetically unyielding milieu" (James McGrath review on rear cover). Illustrated black paper wrappers with white spine panel titled in black. Light rubbing to covers, else clean and bright. Includes laid-in ephemera with prayer for Drexel. 104 pages. REL/061720.

Description:
Paris: Chez Bance Aine, Marchand D'Estampes et Editeur, 1817. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. These scarce two volumes, published four years before his death, offer a monumental history of Napoleon Bonaparte's many military campaigns from 1798 until his final exile to St. Helena in 1815. The tone is exalting and celebratory of his battlefield achievements and the glory they brought to the empire. There over 500 pages of text, 36 engravings of battlefield scenes after the illustrations of C. Vernet and Swebach, a portrait of Napoleon, and five pages with portraits of 100 famous generals. The volumes were rebound at some point in black pebbled faux leatherette with a red cloth spine and new endpapers and in the process the engravings were rearranged in their own sections in each volume rather than interspersed throughout the text. One of the pages of the generals' portraits is bound in upside-down. Most of the engravings are in good to very good condition. A few have margin tears and spotting, and…
