The foreward was written by South Carolina's poet laurate, Archibald Rutledge. The decorations in this handsome book were designed and cut in linoleum by the owner of Ashantilly Press, William G. John Girardeau Legare came to Darien on the Georgia tidewater from his native home of Adams Run, South Carolina in 1877. Until 1905, Legare managed rice plantations at Darien, first at Generals Island, then Champneys. Legare served as the clerk of the City of Darien and for McIntosh County during the first three decades of the twentieth century, maintaining detailed records of public business and documenting much of the commericial and business affairs of the community. Legare's journals are, in essence, a microcosmic history of Darien and its environs during a time that was perhaps the most compelling in the town's history. A very nice sound copy of the dedication for the Oglethrope Monument located on Grassy Knob (later renamed Mount Oglethrope) Georgia in 1930 by Colonel Sam Tate, the owner of Georgia Marble Company, at that time the largest marble quarry in the United States. The Monument was located 10 miles east of the quarry, at the terminus of the Appalachian Trail until 1958. It was restored and moved to Jasper Georgia in 1999. This handout for the dedication in 1930 contains the addresses by Mr. Tate, Justice Price Gilbert and Hon. Randolph Anderson and celebrates the 200th anniversary of Oglethrope's landing in Georgia. Booklet is 32 pages long, with several black and white photos of the area, and attendees. Paper is clean and unmarked, with an occassional wrinkle to the first few pages of the booklet. This book was written in 1966. Some things have changed, some have not. This book is mostly about religion throughout the South, in all social spheres, in all education brackets.
