Description:
London: Macmillan and Co, 1879. First Edition. Near Fine. First British edition. Two volumes, finely bound in blue leather over marbled paper-covered boards. Spines sunned, slight lean to Volume I. Contents toned, sporadically foxed, lightly stained and corner-creased. The two first impressions are indistinguishable, lacking any imprint to distinguish them apart. The first was published February 15, 1879, and the second followed in March of that year. Each consisted of a print run of 250 copies. On some copies, as found here, page 144 in Volume II is misnumbered as page 145. If this is the only difference between the two impressions, it is likely to assume that those with the pagination error would have come earlier. One of Hardy's scarcest novels, it was an immediate success. Edel & Laurence A8b.

All issues in large tabloid format (11.5" x 17.5"), the third being slightly smaller dimensions. Very Good+ overall, with most issues having a horizontal fold in the middle (some more distinct than others), toning, light wear and occasional edge-chipping. Foxing to wraps of third issue. Notes in ink on rear wrap of #7. Very rare as a run. Dubbing itself "The Magazine That's Not for Everyone, " Damage was a calendar of events for San Francisco with interviews, reviews, and features, showcasing the tail end of punk's first wave and its splitting into post-punk, new wave, no wave, and hardcore scenes. This would prove very eventful as the city was a hotbed of creativity during this period with a number of acts that were sonically ahead of everywhere else, even New York and London. Highlights include a collage by… Read More
