It is profusely illustrated with copper plates of major landmarks and features described on the title pages as 'palaces, castles, cathedrals; the ruins of Roman and Saxon Buildings; and of Abbeys, Monasteries, and other Religious Houses, Besides a Variety of Cuts of Urns, Inscriptions, and other Antiquities.' In contemporary full leather bindings with raised bands to spine, red labels with gilt lettering to spine; gilt volume numbers; and gilt tooling on the side edges of the boards, only visible when the book is laid down on its side. With 240 copper plates as called for, and numerous engravings in the text. The contents are in superb and clean condition. The vellum binding is sound and tight. There is some light marking to the boards - including a large spot on the front board. The spine has slight creasing and the front board has a slight warp at the top. Internally there is an ownership signature dated 1884 to the half title page. Contents are complete and very clean with occasional light spotting particularly to the top of the side margins. Endpapers with some light marking. The half title is browned as is the final blank. The last leaf has a design at the front and is unopened.

London: S Smith, 1685 A very good copy of Goedart's work on insect metamorphosis, edited by M Lister, who added an appendix. First edition in this form. Johannes Goedart set up, observed and documented a series of experiments which demonstrated that caterpillars, pupae and butterflies were not different animals, but forms of the same animal. His works were first available in translated form in 1662/7. M Lister edited Goedart's work for the Royal Society and added an appendix on marine life. This copy has been rebound with cloth spine with title label, and marbled boards. The binding is in fine condition. New endpapers. Paris: Chez Everat A good copy of this scarce work in contemporary half leather binding. Undated but 1798. Imagines the continuation of La Perouse's voyage after Botany Bay, describing his death, and the discovery of an island peopled by French escapees from the Revolution. This copy has a red leather spine with gilt compartments and gilt titles. The boards and endpapers are marbled. The spine has a little wear at the bottom and the boards have wear to edges. Internally the endpapers are marbled. Contents: title page, text 397pp plus errata 2pp. The original page marker is present. The paper is very brown-toned to around p300 and more lightly toned with occasional light marking to the end of the work. Otherwise in good clean condition.

Recently rebound in half leather with marbled boards with new endpapers. There is a loose portrait of the author, William Burton, presumably extracted from another book as it is octavo size. With title page, dedication to Lord Villiers, preface, list of subscribers, and detailed description of Leicestershire. Contents are very clean and in very good condition. There is some extensive annotation to the genealogy on pages 54-56 presumably from local or family knowledge. There is a pencil note on p 192 referring to personal knowledge of Thomas Hazelrig of Fawdon in Northumberland. The map has a very small repaired hole. 298 pp plus list of sheriffs and index.

In the preliminary Notice, it states that the facsimile was produced because of public interest in the islands following the publication of 'The Pirate'. This copy is in a plain red cloth binding with the remains of a paper label to the spine. The binding is clean with bumped corners. There is the bookplate of Thomas Wyatt Bagshawe to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents: half title; rubricated title with note to verso indicating that only 145 copies were made; notice 2pp; folding map; original title of 1711; text pp 3-82 with folding map of Shetland; finis; 3pp publisher's adverts. Oxford: Printed by W Hall for Tho. Bowman , 1672 A good copy in contemporary leather binding rebacked with newer spine and title, author and date labels. The work is considered to be one of the first looking primarily at winds. Ralph Bohun was a Fellow of the Royal Society and gathered considerable information from sea voyages. It has been suggested that this could be the first work referencing barometers and the possibility of using a barometer to detect and forecast cyclones. The binding is in near fine condition with newer leather at the corners and edges. The board leather has some scuffing. Internally there are newer endpapers. There is the signature of Richard Handley to the initial blank and a practice 'Richard' underneath. The title page has been relaid and has loss to edges just affecting text. London : T Cadell Jun. and W Davies, 1802 A good to very good copy of the first translation into English of Dante's Divine Comedy. This copy retains the original marbled boards, with new calf spines and corners, so the bindings are clean, sound and tight with some light scuffing to the boards. The translation was completed by Henry Boyd, then Vicar of Rathfryland in County Down. The contents are complete with frontispiece portrait by Stothard and titles and half titles to each volume. Vol I: frontispiece; title; dedication; half title to Inferno; text 408pp. Vol II: title; half title; preliminary essay and text 384pp. Vol III: title; half title; preliminary essay and text with index, errata and addenda 420pp (more detailed collation available on request). All the volumes retain their original endpapers with repair at the joints and stamped ownership details of Richd Hopkins of Huntingdonshire.
