Rededicated - and perhaps presented - to King Charles II by the author's nephew, a manuscript meditation on Psalm 101, unpublished in this form and written as an antidote against the plague. Small quarto (horizontal chainlines & foolscap watermark) bound in contemporary calf with raised bands to the spine and gilt decoration. Three blank endpapers precede a manuscript title page, followed by the dedication to Charles II 'A Tres puissant et Serenissime Roy Charles deuxiesme Roy de la Grande Bretagne' [pp] 11 which is signed at the end 'J Rivet De Caussade en guerci le 23 Apuril 1664' followed by the text of 'Le savory du Ciel ou Meditation sur le pseaume cent un' [pp] 22. A major figure in European Calvinism, Andre Rivet (1572-1651) published his Meditation on Psalm 101 in 1638, having spent a period in Oxford in the 1620s and late settling in Breda. The printed dedication is 'To the Royal Society of London' - but there is no record of an inscribed copy in the society's collections making this the dedication copy. Todd has made occasional annotations throughout the text, revealing the indentities of scientists mentioned, but not named, by Medawar. Peter Medawar (1915-1987) is regarded as the 'father of transplantation' for which research work he won a Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1960 as well as being remembered as 'the wittiest of all scientific writers' (Richard Dawkins). Eighteenth century pigskin binding, external straps, head and tail of spine and a morocco label, with turned-in flaps to edges of boards. Old continental heraldic bookplate on front pastedown, partly torn. Soiling to title page but otherwise a very good copy that collates complete: [ff]2 ff262. A couple of old ink annotations to margins; final upper outer trianglular corner (1x1cm)of colophon leaf torn off. In these dialogues the author tried to reconcile Aristotle and the Neoplatonists and achieving considerable success in doing so. This score is from a large collection of scores that belonged to the conductor Sir Colin Davis, many annotated and used in performance, almost all from the post-war period and including at least two examples of scores from which Davis conducted the work's premier: Thea Musgrave's Clarinet Concerto (Davis was himself originally a clarinettist by training) and Malcolm Williamson's The Stone Wall which Davis premiered at the Last Night of the Proms in September 1971. Most of the scores are full size performance versions, several very large indeed in order to accommodate the scoring of a post-Schoenberg orchestra. Davis achieved global recognition for his conducting with a particular enthusiasm for the music of Mozart, Berlioz, Elgar, Sibelius, Stravinsky and Tippett. Very Good 1963

Fine first edition in green cloth in a fine dust jacket illustrated with Jones' wood engraving entitled 'Everyman'. David Jones was a complex artist, working in water colours and the written word. He was concerned with religious questions of incarnation and crucifixion and had a belief in the calming, consoling and healing power of 'the feminine'. London: Darton, Longman & Todd, 1979. pp 166 A memoir of David Knowles (1896-1974), who was a Benedictine monk of Downside Abbey and Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University, by his friend, fellow academic and contemporary at Downside Adrian Morey. Near fine in fresh white cloth with gilt titles, in a near fine dust jacket, the red lettering on the spine has faded but the wrapper is otherwise bright, clean and undamaged. Signed by David Leach to the half title and dedicated "To Harry - To a very nice wicked young potter from an old un". With David's last Christmas card laid down to ffep, and personal aerogramme and exhibition catalogue laid in. We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. London: Edward T Whitfield, 1868. A copy owned by the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton with his book label on the front pastedown. Quarter pebbled brown morocco over blue marbled boards, marbled endpapers and marbled edges to the text block. Ownership inscription, probably preceding Shackleton's, of 'Ernest Noel' at the head of the title page. A little browning to the paper stock. An uncommon book made doubly attractive by this excellent provenance. Shackleton acknowledged the role of divine providence in his own later published account of his heroic voyage in 1916. The embroidery was likely executed by one or other of 'From Amy to: Norah with Love. March 2nd. 1941' -their gift inscription appears on the first blank. Leiden: Ex Offiicina Hackiana, 1671. With the bookplate and annotation of a former President of the Royal Society (1827-1830), Davies Gilbert Early nineteenth century full calf binding with gilt to the spine and gilt double panelling to the boards. Cracked along the outer hinges, some wear to leather at head and tail of spine; marbled endpapers, engraved title-page and portrait and woodcut initials. Elaborate armorial bookplate of 'Davies Gilbert of Trodrea; Cornwall' to the front pastedown. Annotation by Davies about a discovery which he made in the book, written on the verso of the first flyleaf: 'Bought at Chester April the 19th 1814 and I found in it at Page 227, the Lines... which are engraved on the Table.... lost Barron Church. D.G.' A few marginal pencilled crosses are the only other annotation we have observed. This Leiden edition includes the commentaries of Bernartius, Sitzmanus and Vallini.
