Very good condition, in a modest dustwrapper. Afrikaans text. Read More

Good condition. Afrikaans text. (Nienaber I, p. 268) Overview of the work of J.F. van Oordt, a seminal figure in the development of Afrikaans folk literature, who wrote under the nom de plume of 'D'Arbez'. Read More

It is a remarkable story with few parallels in the field of commercial banking enterprise. Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas), later to be known as Barclays Bank DCO, came into being by the amalgamation in 1925 of three banks, the oldest of which was the Colonial Bank, established in 1836. 'There are,' he writes, 'two sorts of book about trout fishing. One sort has a title like "How to Catch Very Big Trout". This is the other sort of trout fishing book.' In other words, it's a book about fly-fishing that doesn't take itself too seriously and will be rapturously welcomed by all those who fish for pleasure rather than for trophies. ... Very good condition. "Mother. Nurse. Gold-digger. Cause célèbre. When Daisy de Melker stood trial in 1932, accused of poisoning her son and two husbands, the public couldn't get enough of her. Crowds gathered outside court baying for blood, and she waved to them like a celebrity. Against the backdrop of Johannesburg in its golden age, a booming metropolis of opulence and chaos nicknamed the 'City of Gold' and the 'University of Crime', she had quietly gone about her sinister business while around her sensational crimes grabbed the headlines. There was the marauding Foster Gang, which left at least ten people dead; a dashing German hustler; a local Bonnie and Clyde; an innocent student walking at Zoo Lake park at the wrong time and a man who escaped death row to become one… Read More

Good. 'Though he disclaimed that his "Dark Folk" poems (1935) were "translations or imitations of native verse", Slater managed to capture something of the feel and idiom of traditional Xhosa song, as in the lovely "Lament for a Dead Cow" ... and also to convey a sense of a vanishing rural culture, once again in terms of the imagery and conceptual world of the Xhosa, as in "Milking Kraal" ... Description:
(Leipzig, E. Bidder, 1882). ("Gedanken aus und nach der Schrift" S. 131) contempory cloth-back textured paper over boards, defective, pp. 72. Heavy browning and foxing. Poor. The Hermannsburg Missionary Society grew out of a religious revival in the region of Lüneberg during the mid-19th Century. The Society sent its first missionaries to East Africa but these were denied permission to preach in Gallaland and proceeded to Natal where they established a mission on the borders of Zululand. By the end of the century, 124 Hermannsburg missionaries had established themselves in South Africa. The item on offer here concerns itself with theological matters; it may be a critique of the Society and its approach - black letter script rather hard to read. .
