Amstelodami, Apud Ioannem Lanssonium 1638. Small 12mo, 128 x 68 mms., pp. 189 [190 blank], engraved title-page, bound in later, 18th century calf, spine blind in compartments, with authors and title in gilt; front joint slightly rubbed, margins very closely trimmed, but a good copy with several provenances. The English scholar and grammarian Thomas Farnaby (1574/5–1647) fled to Spain at the age of 15, where he converted to Roman Catholocism. He returned to England in 1595 and made a reputation as a school teacher. ODNB records that "Farnaby's reputation thrived. According to J. T. Cliffe, he was '[p]erhaps the most celebrated private schoolmaster in England'. He was incorporated at Oxford in 1616 as 'M.A. Cambridge', and he was a minor canon at St Paul's in London from 1626 to 1629. Large 8vo, 194 x 113 mms., pp. [xlvi,], 525 [526 - 689 Index]; 112 [113 -128 Index], title-page n red and black, fine engraved frontispiece, attractively bound in full contemporary vellum with gilt emblem of Minerva on both covers, with the Coat of Arms of The Hague and "Hague Comitis" in gilt beneath the image, gilt acorns and spines to corners, armorial bookplate "Ex -Libris/ Verbaniae Comitis" on front paste-down end-paper, later autograph "John. Emm. Gyika" on recto of front free end-paper; leaf before engraved title (?presentation leaf) removed, covers a little sprung and slightly soiled, but a very good to fine copy. The notes in this volume are by Cornelius Schrevel (1608 - 1664), who also edited the text, and Nicholas Rigault (1577 - 1654).

Small 8vo, measuring 125 x 95 mms. pp. 66, including half-title, 6 blank leaves after last page of text, 32 woodcut headpieces (one for each "story"), original decorative boards, with paper label on front cover and iconic illustration on rear cover; spine defective and missing about three quarters of the paper cover, but a decent copy. It almost looks convincing, but this is probably the Leadenhall Press facsimile of 1900.

Vigurs..., 1803. 12mo, 185 x 107 mms., pp. xiv [xv - 17] 18 - 265 [266 errata], including half-title, uncut, rebound in half chocolate brown calf, marbled boards, morocco labels, in 2000 by Hilaria Honess, Hayle, with a ms. note to that effect on the lower margin of the front paste-down end-paper, below the bookplate of Antony Charles Thomas. A very good copy. Set on the island of Lesbos, this is the only known work by the second century Greek author, Longus. It was first published in modern times, in 1559, in a French translation by Jacques Amyot. This English translation is by Charles Valentine Le Grice (1773–1858), It was noticed in The Anti-Jacobin Review and Magazine in 1803. Londini: Apud T. Cadell et G. Davies, 1811. Tall 8vo, pp. 48, original boards; spine defective, front joint cracked, rear hinge cracked. With the contemporary autograph "A Harrison/ Ch Ch" on the front paste-down end-paper. First published in 1754, Browne's De Animi Immortalitate was first translated into English by W. Hay, also in 1754, and subsequently by various other 18th century authors.

Patavii [Padua], Typies Seminarii, Apud Joannem Mentrè, Superiorum Permissu, 1768. 12mo, pp. 420, disbound but with old end-papers preserved. Dominique de Colonia (1660 - 1741) first published hsi work in 1722. The edition of the work by Jouvency (1643 - 1719) that I have found was published in 1699.

Small 8vo, 107 c 70 mms., foliaed, 118 leaves, contemporary sheepskin, all edges gilt; binding a bit worn, front end-papers wormed, no rear paste-down end-paper, rear hinge cracked and open. OCLC locates copies only in European libraries, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek�, Staatsbibliothek Bamberg, Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Universitaatsbibliothek Eichstatt, Mannheim, and Biblioteca Nationale Centrale di Roma.

Lugdun[i] Batavor[um] Ex Off. Joan. Maire, 1633. 32mo (in 8s), 84 x 43 mms., pp. 256, including engraved title-page with image of Boethius, later 18th century maroon morocco, ornately gilt borders on covers, repeated on both inside boards surrounding a rectangular blank, gilt spine with decorated gilt scroll, all edges gilt. A fine and attractive copy. De Consolatione Philosophiae was written, as every schoolchild knows, while Boethius (c. 480 - 524) was in prison awaiting trial for treason, of which he was convicted and rather brutally executed. The work alternates between verse and prose, with Boethius speaking his own person in prose, and philosophy answering in verse. In his History of Western Philosophy, Bertrand Russell, another philosopher who was imprisoned but not executed, writes of Boethius: "During the two centuries before his time and the ten centuries after it, I cannot think of any European man of learning so free from superstition and fanaticism. Londini: Typis J. Brindley, 1749. 12mo (in 6s), 120 x 72 mms., pp. [ii], 204, contemporary polished tree calf, small gilt border on covers, spine ornately gilt to an urn motif, red morocco label. A fine copy, with the book label of Lt. General Adams (possibly Thomas Adams, 1730? - 1764) on the front past-down end-paper. The text was edited by Usher Gahagan (d. 1749), the Irish classical scholar. He edited a number of Brindley's classical imprints, all beautifully printed and often in fine bindings. Alas for scholarship: he was hanged on 20 February 1749, for "diminishing the coin of the realm" by filing small pieces off gold and silver coins.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 159 x 92 mms., pp. [2] 3 - 296 [297 - 308 Index, 309 - 310 Errata], contemporary sheepskin, spine richly gilt in compartments, red leather label; top and base of spine slightly chipped, upper front joint slightly cracked, corners worn, but good copy with a not quite decipherable presentation inscription on the title-page. The poet and priest Jacques Boileau (1635 - 1716) addresses the question of church benefices and canon law, both topics genuine show stoppers no doubt in the early 18th century. He seems to have had something of a reputation as an eccentric and dangerously curious writer, with Voltaire commenting that he was an "esprit bizarre qui a fait des livres bizarres écrits dans un latin extraordinaire...." He was also the author of the rather popular book on flagellation, Histoires des Flagellants (1701), which is probably more to the taste of our wanton and profane age.

The astronomer, linguist, and scholar Guillaume Postel (1510 - 1581) published quite a number of books in his lifetime, though he is said to have lived much longer than the dates shown here, reaching the grand old age of 85.
