A very good, clean copy of the second edition of this curious treatise on the existence of Amazons, first published in 1685 by the French physician Pierre Petit (b. 1617). The first scholarly work entirely devoted to a subject which had elicited the interest of the likes of Thévet and Mercuriale, it boasts a painstaking amount of information on all accessible evidence and observations from ancient and more recent sources. Folio in 6s. 3 parts in 1. pp. [xx], 191, [xv]; [iv], 331, [i]; 12, [xxxii]; [iv], 180, [xxii] + engraved title-page and folding map of Utrecht. With half-title, each part with its own title-page. Additional illustrations in the text of coins and seals. Woodcut initials and endpieces. Occasional very light damp staining at fore-edge, small sporadic worm trail to gutter margin near head. Contemporary vellum, title inked to spine. Spine a bit darkened, a few smudgy marks, very good. A generally very clean copy of the first edition of these famous Dutch medieval chronicles, illustrated by a handsome, double-page engraved map of the provinces. Known as the 'Heda and Beka', they were first published by Suffridus Petri in 1612. Arnoldus Buchelius (1565-1641) worked painstakingly on editing the texts anew, leaving an unfinished manuscript upon his death; his work was finalised by L. van Waveren. The catchword at the end of the dedication (T4) does not match the following leaf, as also found in other copies and seemingly due to the insertion of the Preface. Faintly foxed. Contemporary marbled calf, neatly rebacked with original spine retained, orange gilt title-label, gilt borders, gilt-stamped emblem of Haarlem to each board, edges coloured yellow, green cloth ties replaced, corners neatly repaired. A few stains and scrapes to boards, very good. Ownership inscription of John Taylor Coleridge of Park Crescent dated 1851 to preliminary blank. John Taylor Coleridge (1790-1876) was an English judge and the nephew of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834). 'This is the celebrated quarto Variorum edition of Q. Small ink smudge to title-page, internally very good. Contemporary vellum, title inked to spine, board edges slightly overlapped, all edges red. Vellum a little yellowed and spine darkened, but very good. 'Cornwell House' inkstamp to ffep. Originally published as 'De politia Iudaica, tam civili quam ecclesiastica' in Geneva in 1580, this popular work on Hebrew history and traditions was often reissued. The author, Bonaventure Corneille Bertram(1531-1594), originally from Thouars in France, was professor of Hebrew at Geneva and Lausanne.

Plainly rebacked, old leather a bit darkened and scuffed, hinges neatly relined. Early ownership inscription to flyleaf. A few marks and smudges, corners very mildly rubbed, a very good copy indeed. Solerius' De Pileo is a curious work on hats and headgear, pseudonymously published by the French Jesuit theologian Théophile Raynaud (1583-1663). Contemporary semi-limp vellum, later dark green morocco label to spine, date inked at tail, blind panelled boards. Vellum slightly yellowed with some smudgy marks, corners a little bumped, small hole to ffep. Armorial bookplate of Charles Vere Dashwood Esq. (1745-1821). The tenth 'Delphin' edition issued (a classical library for Louis XIV's son, the Dauphin).
