New York: The Dial Press, 1957. No edition stated. Hardcover. 8vo. First half of book in English, second half in French (on different colored paper). 157pp. Black and white illustrations including 57 calligraphic devices by Dali. Rubbing and edgewear to boards. Dust jacket is price-clipped and has darkened spine, rear of jacket is rubbed and shows some scrapes and surface loss. Still a very good copy in like jacket. Nothing has ever aged more rapidly and more poorly than modern art." Dali holds nothing back here as he tells the reader what is wrong with modern art, its artists, and its critics. Nobody escapes. "The critics have been cuckolded by the ugly, the modern, the technical and the abstract." Dali shares critical evaluations of Picasso, Cezanne, Turner, Pollock and others. On Jackson Pollack's work: "The indigestion that goes with fish soup." Quite the entertaining read.

Description:
New castle, DE: Oak Knoll Books, 2008. Second Printing (with corrections). Hardcover. Short folio (9.5 x 12 inches). xiii, 378 pp. Signed on the title page by Kevin Johnson. Black cloth with gilt spine titles. Full page color images of books in dust jackets throughout. A near fine copy in like jacket. The literary origins of the American film noir cycle are more convoluted than a plot contrived by Raymond Chandler after a too-long night at Musso and Frank. Kevin Johnson has paired his obsessions with film and literature to illuminate even the murkiest connections. Identifying every 1940s American film noir with a published literary source, The Dark Page provides concise but fact-filled accounts of the authors, books and filmmakers that came together-often in unlikely combinations-to create a unique and cherished period in film history.Tapping the wells of film historians, cinemanistas, rare booksellers, collectors and librarians around the world, Johnson has compiled an unprecedented dossier of…

Description:
New Delhi: Motilal Banarsidass, 2009. First Indian Edition. Hardcover in pictorial boards. Thick octavo. xxvii + 701pp. A near fine copy. Frederick M. Smith proposes that positive oracular or ecstatic possession is the most common form of spiritual expression in India, and that it has been linguistically distinguished from negative, disease-producing possession for thousands of years. In South Asia possession has always been broader and more diverse than in the West, where it has been almost entirely characterized as "demonic." At best, spirit possession has been regarded as a medically treatable psychological ailment and at worst, as a condition that requires exorcism or punishment. In South (and East) Asia, ecstatic or oracular possession has been widely practiced throughout history, occupying a position of respect in early and recent Hinduism and in certain forms of Buddhism. Smith analyzes Indic literature from all ages-the earliest Vedic texts; the Mahabharata; Buddhist, Jain, Yogic,…

England was going through a civil war, and the state of political turmoil made it possible for Hopkins to assume authority and roam about as he pleased, burning witches and torturing as he went. It is believed that he was responsible for the deaths of 300 people. (This equates to more than half of the total…
