Copyright 1952, published by Les Gémeaux (Paris); written in French. There is an unverified inscription on the title page. The inscription reads, "à mon vieux ami Herbert Bittner." There is an additional inscription by an unknown person.
No dust jacket. Softcover is significantly torn at the spine head and tail and the textblock signatures are visible as a result, the spine is also creased and the bottom corner of the textblock is crumpled/folded. The binding is cracked as a result of the spine wear and can be seen from the inside at the start of the "Planches" section (full-page black and white illustrations); please handle carefully as the pages can start to detach. There are small tears along the edges of the cover and nicks along the fore-edge. Cover is soiled, smudged, and the plate on the front is creased and nicked. Copyright 1939, published by Houghton Mifflin Company (Boston); same date on the title and copyright pages indicating a first edition. Dust jacket has $2.50 printed on the front inside flap. The jacket has significant wear, to include sizeable nicks, chips, and tears along the edges; the rear bottom edge has a tear along the width of the book and up to 1-inch in height. It also has soiling, impressions, scratches, and wear along the edges. Tan hardcovers have minor wear along the edges. Binding has moderate spine lean. Red publisher's top stain on the top of the textblock. Ex-libris sticker on the front paste-down and inscription on the front free endpaper; no other writing or markings. Overall, it is in Good Plus (G+) condition.
