8vo (151x102 mm). 278, [4] leaves. Collation: A-Z8 AA-LL8 MM10. Colophon at l. MM9r. Printer's device on title page and last leaf verso. Contemporary limp vellum, inked title on spine and on the lower edge (soiled, traces of ties). On the front panel and on title page ownership's inscription "Jo: Petri Clericij". Marginal rust spots on leaves AA1-8, a few very light damp stains. A very good, genuine copy.
RARE FIRST ITALIAN EDITION of one of the most important documents for the history of political and educational thought of fifteenth century Humanism. It was begun around 1462, completed in 1468 and first published by Jean Savigny in 1518 under the title De institutione reipublicae libri novem. It has often been seen as a precursor of Machiavelli's Principe and had a great influence on Thomas Elyot's Gouvernour (cf. J. 8vo (152x96 mm). [16], 349, [3] pp. Collation: †8 A-Y8. Large printer's device on last leaf verso (below which a contemporary hand has added the Psalms quote: "[…] Tange montes et fumig[abunt]"). Woodcut historiated initials on black ground. 18th-century marbled calf, gilt spine with five raised bands and lettering piece, red edges (restorations to spine and joints). On the front pastedown engraved bookplate of Henry Blackett with his family's coat-of-arms and the motto "nous travaillons en espérance" (possibly the London publisher Henry Blackett, 1825-1871). Skillfully repaired worm track to the lower margin at the beginning and at the end of the volume not affecting the text, round worm hole in the lower blank margin throughout most of the volume, pale damp stain to the upper outer corner of the first and last leaves, otherwise a very good, clean copy with several reading signs and marginal annotations in Latin (slightly trimmed) by a contemporary hand.

4to (220x158 mm). [4], 123, [1] leaves. Collation: +4 A-Z4 Aa-Hh4. Leaves +4 and Hh4 are blank. Printer's device on title page. Contemporary cardboards "alla rustica", spine with ink title and the later shelf mark "1734" and, on a label, "1494". On the front flyleaf engraved bookplate Antonia Suardi Ponti. Some quired browned, some marginal foxing, a bit loose and with the binding partially detached from the book block, but an exceptional copy entirely uncut and unopened.
FIRST EDITION in Latin (an Italian translation appeared in Genoa in 1598), published posthumously, of the first biography of the great Genovese condottiero and imperial admiral Andrea Doria (1466-1560), who fought for the emperor Charles V in the wars against the king of France Francis I and commanded several expeditions against the Ottoman Empire between 1530 and 1541.

Two parts in one volume, 8vo (160x106 mm). [20], 438, [2]; [16], 575, [1] pp. Collation: †8 ††2 A-DD8 EE4; *8 A-NN8. Printer's device on title pages. Early 20th-century half vellum, double lettering piece on spine. Some marginal staining, small loss to the outer margin of a few leaves without loss. A very nice copy, uncut with deckle edges.
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Atanagi's Delle lettere facete was first published in Venice in 1561. Atanagi had planned a second book, but his work on it was interrupted with his death in 1573. The material was gathered together and published by Francesco Turchi on behalf of Aldo Manuzio two years later in 1575. Both volumes were printed together for the first time in Venice by Altobello Salicato in 1601.

4to (223x160 mm). [8] leaves and [8] plates, of which 2 are folding, designed and etched by Guido Reni. Signatures: A-B4. On the title page engraved arms of the city of Bologna. Woodcut initials. Modern stiff vellum with overlapping edges, red edges. Three heads and two jars drawn in red pencil by a contemporary hand on the verso of a plate. At l. A2 a contemporary hand has written a few lines to the epitaph dedicated to Clemens VIII, adding a reference to his death occurred in 1605. 8vo (151x100 mm). 148 leaves numbered consecutively, including the title. Collation: A-S8 T4. Text in italics. 19th-century morocco gilt, Biblioteca de Salvá supralibros in gilt on the panels, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. Some spotting and staining, two pages soiled, small restauration to the blank lower margin of one leaf, margins cut a bit short but not affecting the text, all in all a good copy.
AT LEAST SEVEN OTHER EDITIONS are recorded to have been printed in the years following the first edition of 1546. The present edition is very close to no. 66 (5th edition) cited by E.
