The dust jacket has a short tear at the foot of the front panel and has mild darkening to the spine. Although the American edition would be the first, I find this dust jacket more interesting. I was shown the following association inscription in another copy of this book: 'I was with 'Pop' West, as we called him, when this book arrived from Random House with a red jacket he detested. Nothing ever seemed to go right for Pop, until his post-mortem renaissance./But we believed in him then./Budd Schulberg'

An introductory essay by Kennan, who was a foreign policy scholar and a critic of the Vietnam War; 27 letters from students at various universities; and a few letters from the 'older' generation, including notable W.H. Auden and Martin Duberman. An interesting period document. Interestingly, the paperback was published only two months after the original hardcover - probably to take account of the timeliness of the subject.

Later printing of this reprint edition, in blue boards with red trim and pages edged in red, in dust jacket. The book is about fine with pages faintly tanned. The dust jacket has some minor wear at the spine ends; there's a small ding at the bottom edge of the rear panel; and a couple small areas of paper loss along the top edge of the rear panel - very good.
