Description:
Autograph Letter Signed. Dixon writes about his wife, photographer Dorothea Lange (1895-1965). Lange is best known for her iconic images of Depression era rural poverty in America. Dixon and Lange married in 1920 and divorced in 1935. Lange established herself as a photographer during the course of their rocky marriage. At the end of 1935, Lange married economist Paul Taylor. Here, Dixon worries about Lange and seeks insight from Blanche Partington, a local Christian Science practitioner in San Francisco where Dixon and Lange lived. The letter suggests that Partington was some sort of spiritual counselor. Dixon apologizes for writing "somewhat gropingly, so you had better read it with reservations. Description:
Water color on paper of a woodland scene, signed, approximately 10 X 12 inches, matted in in tan archival material, measuring with mat 13 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches. King was not a designer in the traditional sense in that she did not make clothes, but rather, she created water color sketches of her fashions. In 1932, she was discovered by Lord & Taylor, the first store to sell her garments. Later that year, she opened her own couture salon on East 61st Street in New York. Her designs were popular among socialites. In 1943, she designed Flying Fortress uniforms for women workers at Boeing Airlines. The Museum at FIT held an exhibition of her design, "Muriel King: Artist of Fashion, " in 2009. Autograph
