A diverse sporting goods catalog that includes a number of items of individual interest. First there is the kite alluded to on the front cover. Within the catalog maintains that this kite, "now Famous throughout the Country", and "KITE FLYING LAWN PARTIES", will be "THE SOCIETY FAD for the Coming Season". In the heyday of kite-flying, coinciding with the dawn of modern-day aviation, the rage, it seems, was for "scientific kite flying". Some of the games advertised in the pages are now obscure, such as "Crokinole", "Pango" and "Carroms", although the last two have more modern versions, perhaps. Title, six page story. 18 vignette illustrations, all woodcut, two or three placed on text pages. Odd promotional piece issued by Edison in celebration of a supposed vindication of its patents in a case involving Great Refrigerator Company. The text is set up as a sort of free form verse in emulation of something Walt Whitman might have done.

Philadelphia: John Wyeth & Brother, 1867. First edition. Wraps. Sting through stab holes. . Near Fine. Oblong, 65 by 87 mm. 8 pages, including wrap covers. Chromolithographic illustration on each page, after the title page, each depicting one of the seven ages. Two months covered each page, the months being shown as a column flanking the illustration. Scarce, with only two copies recorded on OCLC First Search -- Rochester Museum and Philadelphia Athenaeum. Not in Folger catalogue.

Cincinnati, Ohio: The Eagle-Picher Lead Co.. Leather slipcase or sleeve. Very Good. A compact house color kit. N.d., circa 1920. Twenty color cards which underlay three transparencies with house designs to provide the user with a better sense of how a particular color will look with the particular style of house. The houses on the transparencies are a mid-sized Dutch Colonial, a bungalow, and a rather grand Colonial Revival (with hints of Mediterranean style) house. We presume the set is complete, as the color cards are numbered 1 to 20 with none missing in this sequence, and everything fits snugly into the leather envelope or slipcase. There are several transparency sets listed on OCLC First Search, but those with more cards are a bit larger in size, meaning the cards are larger, or the one that might conceivably be the same, or similar, has fewer pieces. The first part of Morris's second book, published in three volumes between 1868 and 1870. THE EARTHLY PARADISE, part of Morris's immense poetry cycles looking back to mythic times, "deals extensively in Greek myth, incorporating for example his THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JASON (1867), which alone runs to an exhausting 10,000 lines." - VG overall. Contemp green cloth has minor bubbling on front board, mild wear on spine tips. One FFEP cut. Interior clean. Clumsy cutting at bottom of two prelim pages. Photos available upon request.

Five of the pages, including title, with brilliant illumination, and particularly winsom are the illustrations of a cock crowing and of a donkey. The verse is written in a mock Old English. Scarce, with only six copies listed as institutional holders on OCLC. Light foxing in the margins and on the blank versos. Light corner wear to the decorated cloth.

N.d., circa 1880s. 34 pp., + 3 pp of pub ad supp. Profusely illustrated in color. Illustrations are mostly of animals and accompany short tales and fables, some familiar from Aesop, others not so. The book essentially has three parts, although it is not officially so demarcated, and the middle section has what appears to be brief stories and illustrations reprinted from the 1830s or 1840s, with that era's style of dress, color, etc. The first and third sections, though, have illustrations by contemporary artists of the first rank, among them Weir and Greenaway. Very Good. 4to. 25.5 by 20 cm. 217, [1] pp. Illustrated with engraved title and 100 humorous hand-colored plates (on 99 leaves), 3 of which are folding, by Isaac Cruikshank, a contemporary of Rowlandson and father of George and Robert Cruikshank. Caricatures and early cartoons here could be sharp, acerbic or gentle. Many glow with whimsy, and all should bring a smile to virtually anyone. Full blue morocco, Riviere & Son binding. With elaborate dentelles and spine decoration. Gilt edges. Rubbed spots on joints, and the slightest fatigue to leather on the spine. One minor closed tear within. Age toning to leaves, which are otherwise clean. A comic masterpiece in a rare true first edition.

New York: D. Appleton & Co.. Slipcase. Very Good. Scarce, with the only copy located on OCLC at Indiana University, and this a later edition (from the 1870s). N.d., circa 1840s. The slipcase is 15 by 9.5 cm. The board, when open, is 15 by 19 cm, oblong. The design of the game is simple and ingenious, with the pieces made of card cut out into a small wedge shape, the piece identified by an imprint image, and the pieces fitting snugly into sleeves for each of the board spaces, or if a piece is taken out, on the side of the board. This construction allows for an ease of portability superior to many later compact chess boards which use miniature pegs for the pieces, and the bill fold design is also quite handsome. Two pieces, one red castle and one red pawn, are not the original pieces but nearly match them to complete the set. With first edition error points in pagination, with following pagination sequence: 591, 584, 595 594, 595, 598, 597, 598 . . . Posthumous work attributed to deceased Hale in part and also attributed to Hill. This copy had belonged to Mario Buatto, the "Prince of Chintz", one of the most famous of New York decorators and also a book collector. Condition: front joint cracked. Clean and tight. Dampstain on rear board, about two by one inch, and a little other minor soiling.

Full Calf, bound with binder rings, and with a slipcase. Fine. An exceptionally beautiful and well-done illustrated manuscript of travel in Egypt. N.d., circa 1920. Oblong, 8 by 6 inches, 21 by 15 cm. Unpaginated, with 61 leaves of card, text and illustrations only on the recto sides, and with majority of pages having some kind of illustration. With original watercolor illustrations of sights and attractions of Egypt, and headings are rendered with a lovely calligraphic hand. Occasionally the author produces Arabic calligraphy and ornament, also exquisitely executed. Some illustrations are mounted, while most are done directly onto the leaves. All are crisply precise and lovely; they include panoramas, night scenes, temples and mosques, statuary, the people -- vendors, bedouins, etc. Perhaps the subjects are not unfamiliar -- these are the things recorded by photographers and travelers from the nineteenth century to the present -- but the quality is high, and they have a cumulative effect… Read More

Pictures are of City Hall, the Vanderbilt twin mansions, Madison Square Garden, Trinity Church cemetery and surrounding buildings, the High Bridge (the aqueduct crossing over the Harlem River), Marble Collegiate Church and the Gillender Building. Adding interest to the images are not just the surrounding buildings and ambiance but also the street life -- horse drawn carriages and hansoms, pedestrians, children playing. The color in the photos is astonishingly rich and well-preserved -- there is no bleeding, fading, or corrupting of the color, it would appear, and this is surely in contrast to virtually any commercial postcard of the same locations from 1900, and postcards that would have been printed off of these proofs. Two of the photos are framed in cherry wood (or stained to look like cherry) frames, with wide, thick bevelled white matting -- the pictures of Madison Square and of the Twin Mansions.
