Jacket shows some toning to spine and a little wear to edges. Very good. A young man's exploits in the South African Air Force.

All edges untrimmed. Frontispiece by Beardsley. Red and black ink to title page. Internally clean, toning to top edge. Toning to spine, wear to hinges and edges, bumping to corners, minor marking to boards. A very good copy.

Upper hinge split, with first gathering a little loose. Light external wear. Good.

Number 15 of just 100 copies thus, SIGNED and dated by the author in blue ink, and additionally INSCRIBED to his paternal uncle Rev. (and Mrs.) J.E. Mackintosh in the same hand. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper. Fore and lower edges untrimmed. With the plain typographic dust-jacket, priced at 21s. A clean copy internally, with just a few small blue ink marks to one plate. Jacket toned and rubbed to spine and edges, with a number of large closed tears and losses around the spine in particular. Reinforcing strips applied to reverse jacket edges, and one old tape repair to rear cover. Very good.

Both hinges starting. Cloth rubbed, especially around joints. Some minor edgewear. Very good. Bret Harte was famous for poeticising the figures of the California Gold Rush. The 'East' and 'West' of the collection refers to San Francisco and New York, the two cities in which he wrote these poems.

Mai-mai Sze was born in China, and this is where her autobiography begins. Her father was part of the diplomatic service and therefore, Sze spent much of her younger life in other countries. She received her education in England, and in this autobiography, there are lively descriptions of her boarding school experience and the British countryside. Alongside her prose, there are charming black and white illustrations drawn by Sze.
