Description:
London : Hodder and Stoughton A near fine copy of the 2nd Hodder edition of this classic work with 24 tipped in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations and designs by Kay Nielsen. Undated but circa 1915. With original red cloth with gilt illustration to front board, and new leather spine, with gilt-lined raised bands and title and illustrator labels. The binding is in near fine clean condition. The corners are lightly turned and there are a couple of very small slightly faded areas on the back board. The contents are complete and have new endpapers. The paper is lightly toned towards the edges and there is occasional very light marking mainly to the bottom margin. There is a very small repaired edge tear to the bottom edge of p246. The first plate (after the frontispiece) does not have a caption - the caption is on a plain leaf bound before it - this was clearly intentional as the pagination accounts for the extra leaf. A lovely copy. Please enquire if you would like to see… Read More

Description:
Osnabrugi [Osnabruck]: Johan.Georg.Schwanderum, 1676 A fair copy of an early edition of Isaac Barrow's classic translation of Euclid's work. Isaac Barrow (1630-1677) was a mathematician, classical scholar and theologian. He is principally known for his work on tangents and Calculus. He was one of Isaac Newton's teachers. This translation of Euclid from the Greek to Latin was his first work. The full leather binding is falling apart: the front board is detached; half the spine is present but detached; and the back board is still attached. Contents: blank; title page; preliminaries 6pp; text with numerous diagrams pp 1-376; half title Euclidis Data 1675; note; text pp 379-424; finis. The front endpaper and the initial blank have been joined by some tape and some sellotape. Apart from that, the contents are in very good clean condition. There is a signature of Walter Stephen to the top of the fep and also to the side of the title page, and a further note in the same hand on p29. There is a… Read More

Description:
London: George Routledge and Sons A very good copy of the George Routledge edition of Emma in recent half leather binding with marbled paper sides. Undated, but published between 1866 and 1878. To our knowledge this edition was issued with a black and white frontispiece. This copy has a hand coloured frontispiece which is therefore likely to have been coloured later. Whenever it was done, and whoever it was done by - they have made a very good job of it. The binding has gilt lined raised bands, title label and author details to spine. It is in fine clean condition. Newer endpapers and initial and final blanks have been added. A page marker is present which looks likely to be contemporary (it has left a light brown trace on the paper). Page edges are marbled. The contents are generally very clean with lightly toned paper. There is the occasional spot or mark eg p 8/9, p 76, p 261.

Description:
London: John Wright , 1652 A good copy of the 'Third Impression much Augmented' in full leather binding with new spine with raised bands and title label and contemporary boards. Blith (1604-1654) was known as a writer on husbandry. He was a supporter of Cromwell as the decorative title page with the motto 'Vive La Re Publick.' demonstrates. The book sets out and promotes improvements in husbandry and was suppressed after the Restoration in 1660. The binding is sound and clean. There is a lot of wear and leather loss at the corners. The marbled endpapers look to have had repair and are probably predate the binding work. The contents have toning and there has been some close trimming to margins notable in the epistles section at the beginning where page titles are missing but there is no loss to text. There is the signature of Philip Styles to the initial blank and a signature of Tho Wilkins, 1683 to the recto of the decorative title - possibly (although could be another Wilkins) repeated at the side of… Read More

There is some nibbling at the top and bottom of the spine with slight loss and similar at the top of the front fold. There are couple of small edge tears at the bottom edge with archive tape repair. The back panel and back fold are slightly grubby. The inside of the wrap has some browning and spotting. The book is clean and sound. The spine and board edges are faded and there is a crease in the middle of the spine at the top. Corners with light wear - more on the bottom corner of the back board. Description:
London: George Samouelle, 1841 A good copy of the 2nd edition in 2 volumes in buckram cloth bindings, with 156 hand coloured plates from drawings by the author. George Samouelle was employed as a Keeper at the British Museum in the entomology collections for 19 years. He is best known for his Entomologist's Useful Compendium (which he later expanded and republished under a different title). The work was much used and commended by other well known entomologists such as John Curtis and William Spence. The Entomological Cabinet was issued in parts (a way of raising income for publication) with work on it starting in 1829. The first edition was published in 1833/34. There were plans for a second issue - but there was not enough interest. The 2 parts that were issued were incorporated in the second edition. The bindings are clean and sound - they are not recent, but they are not contemporary. Each has gilt titles to the spine. There is light rubbing mainly on the boards next to the spine and towards the… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for the Author and sold by John Nutt, 1702 A good copy of the first edition of this scarce work in newer full leather binding. John Dennis (1657-1734) is best known as a dramatist and poet, who was, until his later years, well-regarded as a leading wit and critic. This copy is in a newer binding, with gilt titles to spine, by A W Lumsden of Edinburgh. There is bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian, to the front pastedown. A loose bookseller's catalogue indicates that Robertson probably obtained the work in marbled paper wraps and commissioned the binding. The wraps have been retained. Contents: rubricated title page dated 1702; dedication 2pp; introduction and text 54pp with large folding table; finis. The top margin has been very closely cropped so some page numbers are missing, but all the text is present. There is some scholarly ink annotation at pp 11,28,31,32,38 - some of which involves crossings out. There is some expert paper repair - including to the… Read More
