First published account in original wraps of Carlo Matteucci's (1811-1868) experiment in which he discovers that each heartbeat of a frog is accompanied by an electrical signal. This discovery eventually forms the basis for electrocardiography (EKG). Figures 1 & 2 of dissected frog legs on folding plate at rear help to illustrate the theory. 257-384 pp. 8vo. Brown paper wraps with chipping at edges but remarkably clean and intact given the age. Interior clean with many sheets uncut. Encased in custom cloth and leather pamphlet case.

Contains article by John Clark Hawkshaw (1841-1921), the son of John Hawkshaw (1811-1891), explaining his father's proposale for a cross-channel tunnel from England to France. Contains three large folding plates (V, VI, VII) in Fine condition that illustrate the path of the tunnel, elevations and soils through which it would be built, and cross sections of the completed tunnel construction. The "Chunnel," completed in 1994, follows a very similar path. Starting with the text of 1870 edition of Raphael Pumpelly's "Across America and the Asia, Notes of a Five Years' Journey Around the World and of Residence in Arizona, Japan and China" in which the Arizona section of that original book is reproduced via photographs for the reader to read. Although the exact route Pumpelly took across the Sonoran Desert in 1861, Klett provides an approximation of the journey, much of which now lays in the Barry M. Goldwater Bombing Range. Klett's photoraphs document the present day with large color photographs of natual wonders as well as the human impact on the desert in the form of abandoned missile casing from Air Force practice runs, clothing left behind by migrants moving through the desert, and abandoned structures. This is a limited edition produced in an edition of 500 copies this being #42, signed at the colophon by the Secretary of the order. It also has the copy number and recipient name embossed on the cover, James J. Algrant (1926-2018). Algrant was the author of "Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem - An up-date to the History of the Order 1983 to 1987" and this copy is inscribed to him as well by the author on the second free endpaper.
