Description:
Philadelphia: Published by F. W. Thomas, 1852. Rare first edition of Goepp's criticism of Kossuth. Octavo, bound in full cloth. Deaccessioned from the Library of Congress with the library's bookplate and stamp to the pastedown. In good condition. Rare. Hungarian politician Lajos Kossuth was widely honoured during his lifetime, including in Great Britain and the United States, as a freedom fighter and bellwether of democracy in Europe. In 1851, he visited America with the intention of appealing to European immigrants in the American heartland with hopes that he could rally them behind the cause of a free and democratic Hungary. During his visit, Kossuth infuriated the abolitionists by refusing to say anything offensive to the pro-slavery establishment, which, however, did not give him much support. Abolitionists said that Kossuth's "hands off" position regarding American slavery was unacceptable. Wm. Lloyd Garrison, on behalf of the American Anti-Slavery Society, published a pamphlet "exposing… Read More

c. 1920. Early 20th Century French Empire Dore bronze inkwell featuring prominently a large bronze eagle flanked by two bronze inkwells on clawed feet. Sited on a green marble base atop two bronze winged lions and two rear feet. The entire piece measures 15.25 inches long, 7.25 inches deep, and 8.5 inches tall. In fine condition. A handsome library decoration. Inkwells became popular after the Romans invaded Egypt in the first century B.C.E., where the earliest examples were used in a highly restricted quantity by Egyptian scribes. The practice of using inkwells to write fell out of primary use in the mid 20th century when fountain pens were developed and nibs were first mass-produced by Josiah Mason in Birmingham England in 1828.

Abraham de Peyster and Samuel Bayard dated January 3rd 1718, copied on April 8th 1817 by Stephen Ludlam, City Surveyor. One page, the hand-colored map details the intersection of Wall Street, Broad Street, and Kip Street (now Nassau Street) and includes the Presbyterian Church, the original City Hall, and 23 partitioned lots each labeled as owned by Abraham DePeyster or Samuel Bayard. Born in 1657 in New Amsterdam, wealthy merchant and ship owner Abraham de Peyster received numerous political appointments in New York City at the turn of the 19th century. He became the 20th mayor of New York City in 1691, a position he held for three years, and on October 4, 1698, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Judicature. Because of regular conflicts of interest that arose due to his extensive business involvement, he was recused from many cases. Despite this, he… Read More

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1980. First edition of this epic masterpiece by the author of A Clockwork Orange, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Jose Matos, A man in search of a magician Anthony Burgess." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear to the spine. Jacket design by One Plus One Studio. In Earthly Powers Burgess created his masterpiece. At its center are two twentieth-century men who represent different kinds of power—Kenneth Toomey, a past-his-prime author of mediocre fiction, a man who has outlived his contemporaries to survive into, bitter, luxurious old age, living in self-exile on Malta; and Don Carlo Campanati, a man of God, eventually of church revolution and a candidate for sainthood beloved Pope, who rises through the Vatican as a shrewd manipulator to become the architect. Through the lives of these two modern men Burgess explores the very… Read More

Signed by both Nobel Laureates Naguib Mahfouz and Nadine Gordimer, who contributed the foreword to this volume. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Both signatures were obtained in person. Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988 for his status as one of the first contemporary writers of Arabic literature to explore themes of existentialism (Gordon, 2007). He published 34 novels, 350 short stories, dozens of movie scripts, and five plays over a 70-year career. Many of his works have been made into Egyptian and foreign films. Mahfouz's work describes the development of his country, Egypt, in the 20th-century but in a manner that combine the literary techniques of Eastern and Western literature, authors such as Marcel Proust and Franz Kafka. Samuelson was in Haberler's first Harvard class in 1936. Haberler was an Austrian-American economist who worked in particular on international trade. New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1948. First edition of this landmark work in modern economics having sold 4 million copies in 40 languages. Octavo, original cloth. With a rare signed note from Samuelson laid in. The response is from a letter from a boy scout dated March 16, 1971. Samuelson's response is "The motto "Be Prepared" has stood me in good stead over the years. Paul A. Samuelson." The book and letter are both in near fine condition. Rare and desirable. Its fundamental impact on the opinions and approaches of today's most influential economists is extraordinary. Upon publication this text immediately became the authority for the principles of economics courses. The book continues to be the standard-bearer for principles courses, and continues to be a clear, accurate, and interesting introduction to modern economics principles. The New York Times considered Samuelson to be the "foremost academic economist of the 20th century." Named to The Times Literary Supplement 100 most influential… Read More

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1998. First edition of the first study to discuss output and input price indexes. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by Karl Shell on the front free endpaper. In fine condition. This is a book on the theory behind the construction of production index numbers. Well-known examples of such indexes are the Gross Domestic Product, the Producer Price Index, and labor productivity. Fisher and Shell provide the analysis behind this class of index numbers. They treat separately the different production units and different forms of industrial organization. They show the direction of bias in traditionally calculated index numbers and how biases can affect fundamental conclusions about the growth or stagnation of the economy.

Description:
New York: Laissez Faire Books, 1986. Considered among the leading economic thinkers of the "Austrian School," Henry Hazlitt was a philosopher, an economist, and a journalist. He was the founding vice-president of the Foundation for Economic Education and an early editor of The Freeman magazine, an influential libertarian publication. Economics in One Lesson was praised upon publication, and has since sold over one million copies. "It is a brilliant performance. It says precisely the things which need most saying and says them with a rare courage and integrity" (F.A. Hayek). "A brilliant and pithy work first published in 1946, at a time of rampant statism at home and abroad, it taught millions the bad consequences of putting government in charge of economic life. College students across America and the world still use it and learn from it. It may be the most popular economics text ever written" (The Von Mises Institute).

The June 1946 issue of the The Economic Journal, containing a notice of Keynes' death and his posthumously printed article: The Balance of Payments of the United States. Octavo, original wrappers. In very good condition. Ink notation to the front panel. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Keynes spearheaded a revolution in economic thinking, challenging the ideas of neoclassical economics that held that free markets would, in the short to medium term, automatically provide full employment, as long as workers were flexible in their wage demands. He argued that aggregate demand (total spending in the economy) determined the overall level of economic activity, and that inadequate aggregate demand could lead to prolonged periods of high unemployment, and since wages and labor costs are rigid downwards the economy will not automatically rebound to full employment. Keynes advocated the use of fiscal and monetary policies to mitigate the adverse effects of… Read More
