Mrs. Henry Wood (née Price [no relation], 1814–1887) was the author of a number of novels, but this one, designated a "sensation novel" was a best seller, frequently reprinted, made into movies, etc. It was was originally serialised in The New Monthly Magazine between January 1860 and September 1861, being issued as a three-volume novel on 19 September 1861. A contemporary reviewer, Samuel Lucas, in The Times for 25 January 1862, despite some misgivings about the absurd plot, ended his review, asserting that the novel satisfies "the… Read More

Oxford: Printed by T. Combe...; Sold by J. G. and J. Rivington...[inter alia], 1840. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo, 205 x 133 mms., pp. 144, contemporary boards, later reback; binding slightly worn, but a very good copy, with the bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox on the front paste-down end-paper, and an ink inscription on the recto of the front free end-paper, "Ex libris/ P. H. Bossier/ Coll: Exon:/ Oct 19th/ 1843." Hawker (1803 - 1875) was an Anglican priest, noted for his determination to give Christian burials to seaman who died in shipwrecks. He had two interesting marriages: at the age of 19, he married Charlotte Eliza I'ans, who was 41. She died in 1863, and in the following year he married Pauline Kuczynski, aged 20, by whom he had three daughters, Morwenna Pauline Hawker, Rosalind Hawker and Juliot Hawker. Ecclesia was noticed in The Churchman's Monthly Review for 1841: "This very handsome volume is merely a specimen, and that perhaps a favourable one, of the… Read More

[Bath]: Printed for Private Distribution among Friends. [W. & F. Dawson, Printers, Market Place, Bath. 1868. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 180 x 110 mms., pp [vi], 75 [76 blank], original maroon cloth, blocked in gilt on front cover, gilt spine. A very good to fine copy. These are the rare and surprisingly fine verse translations of Virgil's eclogues by Henry Duncan Skrine (1815-1901) of Warleigh Manor, Somerset. Skrine was educated at Wadham College in the University of Oxford, and an impressive number of his progeny became Oxonians themselves in due course: five are named in Alumni Oxonienses. It may say something of the quality of a nineteenth-century Oxonian education in classical language and literature that Skrine graduated B.A. in 1837, and published these dextrous translations of Virgil more than three decades later. Skrine's Eclogues of Virgil is such a rare book that COPAC finds no copies beyond BL and Oxbridge. OCLC adds UC Berkeley, Yale, Library of Congress, and… Read More

Description:
Bristol [Printed at The Mercury Press], August 1813. 8vo, pp. xx, 43 [44 blank], including half-title, original boards, uncut; corner cut from blank leaf before half-title, spine defective with most of paper missing. Armstrong (1709 - 1779) published The Oeconomy of Love in 1736, and it was frequently reprinted thereafter, though he did not include it in his collected works. He revised and shortened the work for an edition published in 1768, in which he toned down some of the more lubricious passages. The text of the poem here is 617 lines long. The anonymous editor has supplied an introduction of some 15 pages, in which he makes much of the mention in the poem of Gaspar Tagliacozzi (1545 - 1599), who also has a place in Tristram Shandy, in a discourse about the surgical repair of noses.

A Lyon, Chez Jean-Marie Bruyset..., 1766. 8vo, 207 x 130 mms., pp. [iv], xxxvi, 236 [237 - 240 Approbation and Privilege], including half-title, ten folding engraved plates at end, title-page in red and black, fore-edges uncut, recent rebound in half calf, gilt spine, marbled boards. A very good copy. D'Alembert's first exposure to music theory was in 1749 when he was called upon to review a Mémoire submitted to the Académie by Jean-Philippe Rameau. This article, written in conjunction with Diderot, would later form the basis of Rameau's 1750 treatise Démonstration du principe de l'harmonie. D'Alembert wrote a glowing review praising the author's deductive character as an ideal scientific model. He saw in Rameau's music theories support for his own scientific ideas, a fully systematic method with a strongly deductive synthetic structure. Two years later, in 1752, d'Alembert attempted a fully comprehensive survey of Rameau's works in his… Read More
