The sole UK printing published by Combined Arts, Bath in 1988. One of a limited edition of only 950 copies. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some minor creasing to the bottom left hand side of the first few pages. This edition was published in wrap covers but a handful were specially issued by the publishers as casebound with decorated cloth covers. This copy is one of the latter copies with Bawden's designed decorated paper covers, and dark blue buckram spine and front corners. The book has been signed in pencil (without dedication) by Edward Bawden to the title page. Although it bears no ownership marks, this copy is from the collection of Peter Sampson of the Merivale Press, who was a friend of the Bawdens. The catalogue of Bawden's work in this survey begins in 1922 and proceeds chronologically until 1983, a record of just over sixty years work, mainly in graphic design, book illustration, wallpapers, ceramics and murals. It also includes a list of exhibitions of Bawdens' work from… Read More

Description:
The sole UK printing of this illustrated edition published by Golden Cockerel Press, London in 1947. Number '383' of 500 copies issued on Arnold's hand-made paper with the Golden Cockerel Press watermark, of which one hundred copies were specially bound in vellum at Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. The vellum spine with gilt titling has a few lights spots. The cloth boards with gilt decoration are clean. The binding is tight. Top edge gilt. Free from inscriptions. Some light sporadic toning to the page edges in places, more so to pages 12-15, 90-91 and 132-133, and the rest mild - all copies appear to have been affected with this to some degree, and it does not particularly detract. Profusely illustrated throughout with engravings by John Buckland-Wright. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. One of the highlight productions from the Golden Cockerel Press. Increasingly scarce. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

The sole UK printing published by Lion and Unicorn Press, London in 1960. This is number '37' of only 200 copies issued. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some light pushing at the spine tips and a little light unobtrusive spotting in places to the covers. Free from inscriptions. Internally very clean. Profusely illustrated in colour throughout by Edward Bawden : 'The illustrations have been reproduced from Edward Bawden's sketch-book, which accounts for the shape and size of this book. To avoid spoiling the drawings, the captions have not been printed on the illustrations themselves, but at the beginning of each section.'. Printed tissue guards throughout. The famously bizarrely and humorously mistranslated English phrasebook for Portuguese speakers, which first appeared in Paris in 1836. Perhaps as early as the 1850s, Mark Twain became aware of the book; he wrote an introduction to the first American edition in 1883. Its' nonsense still amuses. This edition with an introduction by Paul… Read More
