Likes to fall open at a certain signature, although the binding is secure and non-problematic.

Very minor bumping to the spine ends of a couple volumes, otherwise all volumes fine, with bright colorful boards, sharp corners, and clean, unmarked leaves. Very good slipcase shows some browning/soiling and light wear at the fore-edges. An exceptional copy of this beloved box set.

Signed by Le Guin on the front cover, which features a pen-and-ink portrait of her by Henk Pander. Also signed by Vonda N. McIntyre at her contribution. A Portland-area arts periodical, distributed to attendees of The Oregon Symphony Orchestra, The Portland Opera, etc. This issue features a two-page spread of Le Guin's work: two very short stories ("Ghost Story" and "Courtroom Scene"), a poem ("Everest"), and a block-print illustration of a dragon. Science-fiction writer Vonda N. McIntyre has also contributed a two-page essay on Le Guin titled "Using the Language with Delight." While "Everest" was included in Le Guin's 1981 poetry collection Hard Words, we find no record of the two short stories ever having been collected in book form. A fine copy of this interesting piece for collectors of Le Guin.

A very good copy in like jacket of this story collection by the Argentinian author of Hopscotch. Contains the story "Blow-Up," which served as the basis for the 1966 Michelangelo Antonini film of the same name. Translated from the Spanish by Paul Blackburn. Jacket design by Hoot von Zitzewitz.

Translated from the French by Barbara Wright, who has signed, dated, and briefly inscribed the base of the title page. The first English-language edition of Queneau's OULIPO masterpiece, which consists of 99 versions of an anecdote about a young man who gets jostled on the bus and later receives a piece of fashion advice from a friend. Wright was forced to take creative liberties when dealing with "untranslatable" sections--for instance, those using French tenses for which no English equivalent exists. The results owe much of their success to Wright's own wit and linguistic gifts; Queneau declared himself "seized with inexpressible astonishment" at the strength of her efforts.
