This is an antique pattern catalog, "E. Butterick & Co.'s Catalogue for Autumn 1890." The catalog is loaded with fashion patterns for men's, women's, and children's clothing. Published by The Butterick Publishing Co., London and New York. There are illustrated advertisements at the front and back. By 1876, E. Butterick & Co. had become a worldwide enterprise selling patterns as far away as Paris, London, Vienna and Berlin, with 100 branch offices and 1,000 agencies throughout the United States and Canada. Softcover with both front and back covers present.Condition:The covers have some light foxing and chips/tears along the perimeter. There are a few tiny, dark stains at the outer edge of the front cover. The back cover has light stain spots at the right edge. Both covers and all pages are firmly in place - none are loose. The pages are age-toned, though not brittle. Occasional pencil markings ("x" or underline, for example), next to certain outfits. Overall the catalog is in Good condition.

This is a rare, original copy of "THE EMPTY SLEEVE - or, The Life and Hardships of Henry L. Meacham in the Union Army" by Henry Meacham. Published by the author, presumably in 1869 (though no date of publication is stated). Softcover. Meacham, a member of the 32nd Massachusetts Volunteers in the Civil War, had his arm blown off by a shell near Petersburg in June, 1864. (In the booklet, Meacham writes: "As we were standing there, a shell came through one man and then exploded, taking my right arm off, and killing four of my comrades, making five lives destroyed and one wounded.") He printed and sold this pamphlet to make a living for himself and his ailing wife. This pamphlet is an example of postwar mendicant literature - items printed and sold for the support of their authors - and illustrate some of the hardships faced by soldiers in battle who became disabled veterans in later life. This is a rare, beautifully illustrated book of poetry, "THE ETERNAL LAUGHTER and Other Poems" by W. Starling Burgess. 1903 1st edition, 1st printing; W.B. Clarke Company; Boston. With an Introduction by Julian Hawthorne (Nathaniel Hawthorne's son). The book features wonderful full-page illustrations (including two engraved plates with tissue guards) by Edward Lyne and Edmund H. Garrett. Gilt top page edges.

W. Starling Burgess (father of Tasha Tudor, American illustrator and author) was an American yacht designer, aviation pioneer, and naval architect. He was awarded the highest prize in aviation, the Collier Trophy in 1915, just two years after Orville Wright won it. In 1933 he partnered with Buckminster Fuller to design and build the radical Dymaxion Car. Between 1930 and 1937 he created three America's Cup winning J-Class yachts.
