Description:
Paris, 1936. Typescript, 16 p. on rectos only of fine laid paper (8 ½" x 6 ½"), with handmade and lettered paper wrappers. The wrappers are detached, with chipping along the edges. A possibly unique presentation of Levinson's 1930 essay lauding the accomplishments of Craig, this typescript, including the original French text as well as a translation into English, appears to have been prepared for Craig himself, or at least at his behest. The wrappers are lettered in Craig's hand. In addition, he has made a number of holographic notes at the end, identifying both the author and translation ("D.W.") and adding: "Levinson writing to me soon after says 'Lugne-Poe has written me a letter of hate.'" He also inserted a quote from Horace: "The limbs of the dismembered poet." On the verso of the last leaf, Craig has begun a pencil list of names along with the designations "English" and / or "French" as if compiling a roster of recipients for this essay. A likely scenario was that Craig saw Levinson's… Read More

Description:
Boston: John P. Jewett and Company, 1856. Wraps. Very good. An early printing of this religious tract, which enjoyed a wide circulation in the 1850s. "Stowe reasons that since 'worldly care forms the greater part of the staple of every human life, there must be some mode of viewing and meeting it, which converts it from an enemy of spirituality into a means of grace and spiritual advancement.' Critiquing the strands of Christian Platonism and Calvinism which see discontinuity between the worldly and the eternal, Stowe emphasizes the continuity between 'worldly care' and 'spiritual advancement' with her reading of how the 'Bible tells us that our whole existence here is disciplinary; that this whole physical system, by which our spirit is connected with all the joys and sorrows, hopes and fears, and wants which form a part of it, designed as an education to fit the soul its immortality' (Elizabeth Ludlow, Prayer and the Role of the 'Soul-Artist' in Harriet Beecher Stowe's Historical Fiction). London: The Hakluyt Society, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. One of the most successful Dutch voyages" (Hill 1619). Joris van Spilbergen sailed in command of six vessels from Texel in 1614 charged with reasserting Dutch claims to the Eastern access to the Pacific. After surviving several mutinies Spilbergen sailed through the Straits of Magellan, and up the coast of Peru, disrupting Spanish shipping throughout the area. He discovered land along the coast of what is now California (Borba de Moraes), and on his Pacific crossing discovered several small island groups. "With the conquest of the Molucca islands, a main object of the voyage, Spilbergen had succeeded in establishing the power and reputation of the Dutch East India Company throughout the South Pacific" (Hill). In Java he took on board Le Maire and Schouten's crew, whose vessels had been confiscated. Spilbergen's account is published with that of Le Maire, who found a new passage between the South Atlantic and the Pacific. Second… Read More
