Description:
London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1924 A very good copy of the 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' - in full gilt-decorated vellum binding, signed by Kay Nielsen. With 12 tipped-in colour plates, 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration. He began the work in 1912 but the disruption caused by World War I meant that it was not published until 1924 - and although a beautiful production it could not afford the number of plates that embellished East of the Sun, West of the Moon, his previous work. The market for expensive illustrated gift books declined significantly after the War and Nielsen only illustrated two more works before moving to Copenhagen and working on set designs for the theatre. This book is number 119 of 500 printed. The vellum binding has bright illustration. It has some grubbiness and darkening to the spine; a slight bump to the bottom front corner; and slight marking to the back board, particularly… Read More

With 12 tipped-in colour plates, 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration, begun in 1912 but not published until 1924 because of the disruption caused by World War I. It is a beautiful and expensive production, but the changing market for colour plate books meant that it had to have fewer colour plates than Nielsen's earlier works. This book is number 378 of 500 printed. The blue cloth binding has bright gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. The front board is bright and clean with light corner and edge wear. The spine is dulled with a lot of pulling to the top and bottom, and the back board is clean but with some scuff marks and light corner and edge wear. Edinburgh and London: Archibald Constable and Company; Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown - and White, Cochrane and Co, 1813 A very good copy of the scarce 1st edition in contemporary half morocco binding. George Low arrived in Orkney to tutor in Stromness and later became the Minister of Birsay and Harray. He had a lifelong interest in natural history and was asked to accompany Sir Joseph Banks and Dr Solander when they landed in Orkney returning from Cooke's last voyage. Joseph Banks introduced him to Pennant and he drew on his knowledge and support in classifying the fauna that he saw. He died in 1795 - and the work was published by William Elford Leach, who acted as editor, noting that Pennant had also done some revisions. This copy is red morocco leather with marbled boards, endpapers and page edges. The spine has small raised bands with decorative gilt compartments and titles. Description:
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets… Read More
