Description:
xxx+479 pages with frontispiece, facsimiles, illustrations, appendices and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. Revised edition.
Matthew Bruccolli's revised text of his authoritative Fitzgerald bibliography manages on a number of levels to both correct and advance the first edition of 1972 and its supplement (1980). Without at all jeopardizing any of the initial complication's assets (facsimile title and copyright pages, illustrations of dust-jackets, and a clearly stated and closely adhered to application of such essential critical terms as "state" and "issue"), the 1987 version updates and enlarges upon the earlier two-volume set while at the same time taking the opportunity afforded to interpolate a number of alterations. Expansion of the contents and perfections of the citations aside, the present volume discards some few sections from both earlier books.
Condition: A near fine copy.

Description:
xxvi+386 pages with bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's quarter beige cloth with silver lettering to spine over red boards in original pictorial jacket. First edition. In this fresh and provocative approach to the reading of autobiography, Herbert Leibowitz explores the self-portraits of eight Americans whose lives span almost two centuries and encompass a stunning range of personality and circumstances: Benjamin Franklin, Louis Sullivan, Jane Addams, Emma Goldman, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, Richard Wright, and Edward Dahlberg. In pursuit of clues to both the human essence and the literary artifice of each, he examines their styles (Franklin s plain talk and possum s wit, Sullivan s gilded abstractions, Stein s gossipy ventriloquism, Williams s grumpy clowning and foxy innocence), their metaphors, and their choices of incident, looking beyond their visions of themselves to their true identities. Studies of friendship have emphasized the socio-demographic attributes of "friends," or the rules governing conduct between them, including the rights, duties, and privileges of friendship. This paper supplements earlier studies by focusing on the variable identification of friends under differing circumstances, thereby illustrating the method of situational analysis applied to data other than the manipulation of ethnic identities. Research on friendships among middle-class Americans is interpreted in terms of this perspective. Condition: Spine sunned, spine heal bumped else very good.

Description:
254 pages. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5") bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine in original jacket. First British edition. False Scent is a detective novel by New Zealand writer Ngaio Marsh; it is the twenty-first novel to feature Roderick Alleyn, and was first published in 1960, by Collins in the UK and Little, Brown in the USA. The plot concerns the murder of a West End stage actress during her 50th birthday party, and continues Marsh's fascination with the theatre and with acting. False Scent was well received and sold well, although biographer Joanne Drayton describes it as a "cleverly characterized but, after Alleyn's investigation begins, rather inert novel", and writes of Marsh dramatising the novel with a great family friend Eileen Mackay for a Worthing repertory company ("she wrestled with what she believed was one of her weaker novels"), quoting Marsh's own typically modest comment: "I think the fault may well be that like so many of my books it falls between… Read More
