The first example of this poster we have encountered, which shows Judge Julius Hoffman, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and President Richard Nixon. Description:
Cincinnati: Corey and Fairbank, 1834. First Edition. 47 pages, complete; 8 7/8" x 5 ⅜." Slight odor else near fine, very good minus overall. Very Good. The Lane Seminary debates were perhaps the most extended and famous of many colonization versus emancipation debates that happened in the 1830s. "Founded in 1829, Lane was bakrolled by Arthur Tappan and headed by Henry Ward Beecher. In 1831 a Rev. Samuel Crothers published letters against slavery in a local paper, and a year later Stanton, a student at Lane, held that the North should not help the South put down a slave rebellion. In 1834 Weld and his followers from Oneida became students at Lane. With the charismatic Weld leading off, students armed with literature from the ACS and AASS explored immediatism for eighteen days in two-hour-plus sessions... to the dismay of the administration, the students not only formed an anti-slavery society but also started teaching in Cincinnati's black community. Contact with African Americans made the Lane… Read More

Description:
Lebanon: C.E. Lewis, 1887. Albumen photographs measuring 7 ¾ x 4 ½ on larger mounts. Some marks and scuffs to mounts, some writing to versos, images with excellent contrast and some light foxing, very good overall. Very Good. One of the most destructive fires in New Hampshire in the 19th century broke out in the Mead, Mason and Co. factory the morning of May 10, 1887, and destroyed eighty buildings in a space of ten acres, fully destroying the manufacturing industry in Lebanon. According to a contemporary article in the New York Times, six hundred people were left unemployed and sixty-five were left homeless. These five images by the Lebanon photographer C.E. Lewis capture the aftermath of the fire, and show the extent of the destruction. We find little record of the photographer, C.E. Lewis, but according to the records of the National Stereoscopic Association he lost his studio in the fire as well. We only find records of three of these images at the New Hampshire Historical Society.

Massachusetts, 1890. Albumen and Silver Gelatin Prints, 9 ¾ x 8 ¾ - 8 x 6 inches on larger mounts, three with credits to Conant, photographer, one credited to Benjamin Freeman and one uncredited. Varying wear, very good condition overall. Very Good. The Isaac Royall house in Medford, which still exists as a museum, is most notable for the existence of one of the only separate quarters for enslaved people to exist in Massachusetts. The house was used during the revolution after Isaac Royall, Jr., fled to England, and had several owners before the Daughters of the American Revolution turned it into a museum in 1898. Collected here are three photographs from the opening of the museum, likely taken by Benjamin Howe Conant, with Conant on rectos of two and the other matching an image currently on the museum's site. Another larger albumen print shows the main house with a woman at the door, likely from the 1880s. Perhaps most interesting is the fifth image, taken by Benjamin Freeman of Somerville likely… Read More

Description:
Massachusetts, 1926. Ink on paper, 18 ½ x 23 ½ inches. Excellent. Alexander Johnson, an African-American musician from New Bedford, enlisted in the army at age 16 and was believed for some time to be the first African-American musician in the Union Army. He mustered into mustered into Company "C" of the Massachusetts 54th Infantry under Colonel Shaw. The 54th Massachusetts was the second African-American regiment in the Union army, formed only after the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry. New Bedford had a large population of escaped slaves, and African-Americans from the city enrolled heavily. Johnson had been orphaned at a young age and his adopted father, William Henry Johnson, strongly advocated for African-American enrollment in the Union army, a factor which most likely played a part in the young Alex's enrollment at age sixteen. Johnson served in the 54th for the duration of the war, including the bloody charge of Fort Wagner on Morris Island on July 18, 1863. The 54th lost 272 of its… Read More

Description:
New York: NAACP, 1922. Broadside measuring 15 x 10 ⅞ inches. Some loss at corners else near fine with fine contrast, light normal wear and free of foxing, very good overall. Very Good. A striking broadside printed by the NAACP in 1922, likely in support of the Dyer Lynching Bill, which passed the House of Representatives but not the Senate in that year. The NAACP had focused on lynching and anti-lynching legislation from 1916 onward. The organization partnered with Anti-Lynching Crusaders to organize rallies, mobilize volunteers and advertise. This broadside was part of the group's efforts, and takes issue with rape specifically, debunking the theory that rape could justify the thousands of documented lynchings reported from 1889 to 1922. An important and rare piece, which is often found in lesser condition, with a heavily foxed copy selling at Swann Galleries in 2018 ($4,250).

Description:
Massachusetts, 1898. The 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers mustered into service in May, 1898, and within a month saw significant action in Cuba at the Battle of El Caney. They were one of three volunteer units from Massachusetts to see action on the Santiago Campaign. The regiment was inexperienced - 55% were untrained recruits. The lack of experience, combined with their rifles giving off a very visible black smoke, led to a heavy casualties in the Battle of El Caney. After an encampment near Santiago de Cuba in which a large number of the soldiers became ill with disease - estimates are as high as 65% - the regiment returned home in August. Historians have noted that soldier demographics changed considerably from the Civil War to the Spanish American war, as the smaller number of troops and the lack of a draft led to a more enthusiastic army with higher morale. The photographs in this group are interesting as a typological grouping of images of untrained soldiers, and also for their historical… Read More

Pocahantas: P.W. Poff, 1870. Albumen carte de visite photographs measuring 3 ½ x 2 ½ inches on slightly larger mounts. Some fading to some images, one in fine condition, good to very good overall. Very Good. A series of images taken by P.W. Poff, who also operated a studio at Bluefield, West Virginia. Pocahontas, in Tazewell County, was the site of a coal boom in the late nineteenth century when these pictures were taken. The large two-state coal region serviced by the Norfolk and Western Railway was named after the town. The images show a woman in formal dress, a pair of men standing together, and then two images of the same subject wearing a hat. There are no other clues as to the identification of the subjects, who very well may have been residents of West Virginia, as Pocohantas is situated on the border between the two states.

San Francisco: San Francisco Examiner, 1950. Silver press prints, the images measuring 5 3/4x8 1/4 inches and slightly smaller, sheets approximately 7 ¼ x 9 inches. Some light wear, editorial marks to versos, near fine condition overall. Near Fine. Offered here is a series of fourteen photographs taken in a migrant workers' camp fourteen miles west of Phoenix, Arizona, in March of 1950. Juvenile Court Judge Thomas Croaff reported that 100 children were starving at the camp, drawing press coverage and state aid. The photographs show the workers and their families in camp. One shows a Creek family playing outside at the camp, with several camp structures shown in the background. Several show a nearby store offering aid to children from the camp. Though the judge's decision helped alleviate the situation in this instance, there were many other labor camps in similar situations, with Governor Dan Garvey calling attention to similar migrant farm worker camps in Mesa, Bisbee, and Pinal counties. Description:
Tuskegee, 1914. Oblong 8vo, decorative pebbled cloth over thin boards, 8 x 5 inches. With fourteen pages of inscriptions from fellow classmates. Some pages detached, wear and toning, good condition. Good. An interesting book of dedicatory verse to a student in the Tuskegee Institute class of 1915, from his classmates, all written in May of 1914. Stewart writes on the front pastedown, " Myb album is open, come and see, for you to waste a line or two upon me, so when the summer days make us part, I shall always remember you in my heart." Stewart was from Taylorsville, Illinois. The inscriptions from his classmates - mostly sentimental verse- are an interesting document in the Tuskegee coeducational model and more broadly shed light on the culture of the African-American student culture during the time. "Dear Stewart," his roommate Emmit Strode writes, "This summer you and I may be far apart, but I hope that you will bear in mind that I am with thee in heart each day avoe all things do the right, and… Read More
