Boissellerie Joseph Lamy was founded in 1890, and specialized in then production of the wellknown wooden boxes for cheese. This is there finely printed illustrated price list No. 88. A most interesting account of this remarkable aspect of 'medicine'. The pictures showing famous Philippine healers in, often bloody actions, reaching into patient's bodies to perform their healing.

Original illustrated wrappers (small piece from the upper corner of rear side gone). ¶ Songs and advertisements for 7 nostrum by this firm. One of them, N.H. Downs' Elixir, "was reported by the federal chemist to be a sweetened solution of opium, ipecac, glycerin, and a small amounts of calcium potassium and iron compounds, flavored with anise"(Cramp, 89).

With 1 double page table and numerous illustrations. ¶ With a foreword by Robert Jones, the geatest figure in British orthopaedics: "This book aims at establishing principles explaining the manner in which body growth is affected by injurious influences. These principles have hitherto been ignored by textbooks of pathology.... The author gives us a standard for judging the 'constitution' of men from size, form, attitude and grait, from the condition of their hands and feet; and the insight into the causes of these defects provides us with principles to cultivate strength in future generations.... It carries a torch into the dark places and display a new line of research both fascinating and scientific, and of great social and practical promis". The author, an orthopaedic surgeon of international reputation, will be remembered for his theory of dissociation of bone growth (see g&m, 4395).

A very nice and clean copy with ample margins and printed on thick paper. With the bookplate of Tousel son, "Docteur en médecine à Arrras". The author "have inserted the name of physicians only who are either dead, or have quitted practice". Attractive binding!.

Title printed in red and black. With a fine engraved title vignet by S. Fokke. ¶ The very rare first edition. Later editions Amsterdam 1755 & 1760. --(Lower corner of title-page neatly repaired; a split in the bookblock between page 416-417; text partly slightly browned, but a very acceptable copy of this rare item). Copy with the bookplate of Dr. R. Rickaert. Not in Volckringer.

An almost forgotten novel about Opium, set in the exotic location of Indocine, and with many soft erotic illustrations.

(margins sligthly cropped) ¶ A splendid and richly tone portrait after the Woodburytype photomechanical process which often equals true photographic prints. The technique became widely used from the mid-1870s until the early 1890s. Dorvault, the father of French 19th century pharmacy, published during is life span 9 editions (1844-1875) of his "L'Officine". In 1880 the 10th edition of this work was published posthumously, and it include the present portrait which seems to be the only portrait of Dorvault included in an editions of "L'Officine".-- (Partly some scattered light marginal staining; preserved under acids-free passepartout).
