A programme of events to celebrate the centenary of Franklin D Roosevelt, held at Campobello, New Brunswick, which was the President's summer retreat. Bound in white card wrappers blind stamped with an attractive sailing ship design flanked by a star and a maple leaf signifying the close links between Canada and the USA. The programme is nicely illustrated with photos from the Roosevelt family album. Near fine, a couple of scuff marks to the upper cover. London: The Hogarth Press, 1925. Beautiful examples of Virginia Woolf's two great essay collections that were published in her lifetime. The first volume is in first edition grey cloth-backed paper covered boards to Vanessa Bell's design, a bright clean copy, internally unmarked, a near fine copy. The second volume is in publisher's green cloth which is brightly attractive and in near fine condition in a very good example of Vanessa Bell's dustjacket, light foxing to lower panel of jacket and a small chip at the head of the spine. Among the essays are Woolf's thoughts on Jane Austen, the Brontes and 'How Should One Read a Book?'. In the case of these two books, read and marvel. Diary issued to professional footballers complete with The Laws of the Game, fixture lists, league positions for the 1959-60 season and football field diagrams on the endpapers. Bound in brown rexine with three lions in gilt on the upper cover. A week per double page spread, culminating in a Saturday! From the estate of a professional footballer who played with Blackburn Rovers. A very few handwritten notes of dates and birthdays. Produced long before the idea of football memorabilia became a thing, F.A. diaries are very uncommon. Fine 1960

A large print story book for boys dating from 1936, featuring cartoons, Irish jokes and school, sports and adventure stories illustrated with black and white drawings, with titles such as "The school that went broke" and "The Boy-Plane". Good in illustrated paper covered boards which are rubbed to the edges and lower cover, one third of the backstrip is missing and the spine is starting to crack but the binding is sound apart from one detached page. A few of the illustrations have been neatly coloured in. Ownership inscription of Stanley Evans. A scarce title, there is one copy at the British Library. Good 1936

London: James and James, 1989. Hardcover. Near Fine. pp96 An illustrated history of the textile manufacturing company founded by Samuel Cunliffe Lister at Manningham Mills in Bradford. The book is near fine in clean red cloth with silver titles; a souvenir pamphlet of Lister's 1947 exhibition is tipped in to rear end paper. In a very good dust jacket which has been reinforced neatly to verso with tape. This book comes from the collection of Yorkshire bookbinder and bibliophile Martin E Thorpe. Near Fine 1989

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1977. Soft cover. Very Good. Colin Davis' lightly annotated conductor's score of the 'revived' version of William Walton's mini-masterpiece Façade with the conductor's initials in pencil to the upper cover. Large folio in green card wrappers of this new work created by the composer for his 75th birthday - using unpublished numbers from the original work. The title is written in black ink to the upper cover which is lightly stained. There are occasional annotations in Davis' hand for the second performance of this work (it was premiered a couple of months earlier by Charles Mackerras) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in June 1977. Davis' annotations include pencil markings of time signatures and notes regarding performers, thus [Cathy] 'Berberian' at the head of the fifth movement and a pencil marking of crotchet = 50. Galway: Kennys of Galway, 1990. pp 163 This is the illustrated book of an exhibition of portraits of more than 100 Irish writers by 75 contemporary artists organised by Kennys of Galway to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary. It includes sculpture such as Seamus Heaney by Marjorie Fitzgibbon, drawings by Brian Bourke and Michael O Dea and numerous paintings of authors including Samuel Beckett, Michael Hartnett and Kate O'Brien. Each portrait is reproduced in a full page colour plate and the volume concludes with brief biographical notes on each artist and writer. Inscribed by Monica Kenny and other members of the bookshop staff to Scottish author Alasdair Gray. The book is fine, the dust jacket is very good, rubbed to edges and corners. A very good plus jacket of an extremely nice copy of this book which is taken from the collection of a Yorkshire bibliophile who specialised in twentieth century firsts with a particular emphasis on post-war crime fiction. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1931. xvi, pp 1-294. First edition. The autobiography of the legendary rower and coach Steve Fairbairn in its very uncommon dustjacket. The book is Very Good in the black publisher's cloth binding lettered in yellow, boards a little scuffed and spine lightly creased, outer leaves and edges foxed, top corner torn from the front free end paper, no adverts to the rear of the book; with the original mauve pictorial dustjacket which depicts two silhouetted eights in action on the front panel of the jacket. The jacket is good, faded, torn across the front panel which has a small damp stain, chipped to corners and the foot of the spine. Steve Fairbairn is credited with revolutionising rowing technique in the Britain in the early twentieth century through his pioneering work at Jesus College Cambridge and his subsequent publications. Near fine in publisher's red cloth illustrated with a bird and nest design, the cloth is clean, the gilt bright, the text block is aged toned but clean. Prize label awarded to Edwin Hodges by Harborne Chapel Sunday School. This book comes from the collection of the scientist and pioneer birth-control campaigner Marie Stopes (1880-1958) which was inherited by her son the philosopher Harry Stopes-Roe (1924-2014) and sold following the death of his widow Mary Stopes-Roe in May of this year. Mary was herself an academic and author, the daughter of the engineer and inventor of the bouncing bomb, Sir Barnes Wallis. 1900

London: Richards Phillips, 1805. Very Good. [xi] pp1-638 The sixth edition of The Farmer's Calendar owned by Mary Anne Whitby of Newlands, her bookplate dated 1832 is found on the front pastedown. Mrs Whitby was an authority on the cultivation of silkworms who reintroduced sericulture to England and in the 1840's corresponded extensively with Charles Darwin about inherited characteristics in silkworms and other insects. The book has been bound in half leather over marbled boards with gilt titles. In very good condition, the spine leather and boards are rubbed and worn to the corners but the binding remains sound and the text is clean and bright. Very Good 1805

Bound in half vellum over marbled boards with black Morocco label with gilt lettering, red edges, last quarter of the 19th century, binder's ticket of 'T Connolly, 10 Up. Ormond Quay, Dublin'. In very good condition, a small area of wear to the lower board, the pages are bright and crisp, there is a small hole in the margin of page 37 and some penmanship to page 3 but no legible inscriptions. From an extensive Irish collection of quarto plays. Very Good 1706

[frontispiece] [4] pp 36 [3 plates] Scarce play with a mountaineering frontispiece sketched by the author and lithographed by Day and Sons. The play is set in the aftermath of the Northumbrian Jacobite rebellion of 1715 in which Countess Derwentwater escaped, and saved her liberty and the family jewels by clambering up one of the clefts of Wallabarrow Crag, since called the Lady's Rake. Bound in purple cloth with the original black label to the upper cover with faded lettering; brown coated endpapers with bookplate of Wood Hollin Hall on the first pastedown, foxing to preliminaries, three further full page engravings. This copy, number 107 of 298, was owned by Charles Monteith whose name appears on the list of subscribers.
