Description:
[Amsterdam: Visscher, 1658. Four hand-coloured copper engraved maps. A set of the four continental maps from the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. The Dutch were especially well equipped for the role they played in the European discovery and colonization of the wider world. Unencumbered by any desire to impose their religious or political beliefs, they simply wanted to trade commodities and profit thereby. The ascendancy of the Dutch in global trade lasted only as long as they could withstand the English and French, who, with much larger populations, ultimately overwhelmed them, but for a considerable portion of the 17th century, the Dutch were supreme. The outlines of the world the Dutch merchantmen discovered was conveyed to the rest of Europe (as Spain and Portugal did not) in beautifully engraved and coloured maps that resonated with authority. In these four maps by Visscher, with only a few exceptions (Hokkaido, Australia, New Zealand and the mythical Anian), the continents are delineated and… Read More

Description:
London: Published by White and Co, 1810. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving. Good condition apart from several skillfully repaired minor tears in the margins, a small foxing mark in the left margin, and a few light waterstains in the right margin, one of which extends slightly into the top right corner of the image. A picturesque view of the torrential falls of the River Ryhdol, near Hafod House from "Tour to Hafod," a fine collection of plates depicting the mansion and its surrounding landscape engraved by Stadler after drawings by Smith. Comprised of 15 views, Tour to Hafod also included comprehensive descriptive text by the scientist and collector James Edward Smith. The work was most likely intended as a tribute to the social benefactor and literary man Thomas Johnes (1748-1816), who devoted much of his life to his home region of Cardiganshire, where he served as a lord-lieutenant, a colonel in the militia, and an MP for the borough of Cardigan. Description:
London: John Boydell, 1768. Engraving, coloured by hand, by Philip Charles Canot. A fine example of van Laer's 'bambocciata' compositions, ably engraved by one of the great late 18th century engravers working in London. The title notes that the original picture, from which this engraving is taken, was 29 inches by 38 inches. Dutch painter and printmaker, [Van Laer was ]... active mainly in Rome, [where] he established a reputation as the inventor of the bambocciata (Fr. bambocciade), a variety of painting characterized by its small size, naturalistic style and references to contemporary Italian popular culture. He attracted many followers in Italy, known as the Bambaccianti. Peter Charles Canot (1710-1777) '...was a native of France, who came to England in 1740, and remained...till he died. He was a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1766, and was elected an associate engraver of the Royal Academy in 1770, when that degree was first instituted. Description:
London, 1715. Broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Disbound. Small folio. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. A rare British leaflet from the Fishmonger-Smackman Controversy of 1715. That year, a bill was in motion before Parliament that would regulate various aspects of the fishing industry, including fish size, net use and mesh size, and the importation of lobster. The latter issue ignited a significant controversy between and among British fish merchants and lobstermen, with the most vocal merchants supporting a clause that would remove a ban on the sale of lobster caught by foreigners. In the present document, the pro-free-trade-lobster fishmonger lobby responds to a recent leaflet by fellow fish merchants allied with the smackmen. An early example of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. Description:
[Rome: Bouchard & Gravier, 1775. Etching with engraving, coloured by hand. Very good condition apart from some very light foxing. A beautiful, exuberant image from one of the rarest colour-plate bird books 'Recueil de cent-trente-trois Oiseaux des plus belle especes'. Maddalena Bouchard may be considered by some as a primitive among bird artists; however, while her birds are not true to nature in the conventional sense, they have more exuberance and charm than those of almost any other ornithological artist with the possible exception of Manetti's Ornithologia (1765-76). Bouchard was also responsible for plates in Bonelli's Hortus Romanus (Rome 1772-93), which was also published by Bouchard and Gravier. The Barbary Falcon inhabits North Africa and the Middle East. Cf. Anker 53; cf. Nissen IVB 124; cf. Fine Birds Books (1990), p. 79; cf. Ripley and Scriber p. 37.

[London: Daniel Giraud Elliot for the subscribers, 1883. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Smit after Joseph Wolf, printed by M. & N.Hanhart. A very fine image from 'the best animal painter who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer). The `Pampas Cat Felis colocolo... inhabits open grasslands, scrub and mountainous areas in South America from Ecuador south and east to Chile and Patagonia. The scientific name pajeros used by Elliot comes from the Spanish for straw because these cats often live in reed-beds. Favoured prey are small mammals such as cavies, but also birds and reptiles. Roughly the same size as a domestic cat: length from 30 to 40" overall; weight from 7-13lb. Pampas cats have long lax fur, the coat is predominantly grey shading to red and sometimes spotted, particularly on the undersides; markings and coat length vary according to locality. The individual in the foreground of the painting with russet spots on the underparts is from Chile, while that standing behind has darker spotting and is the… Read More

Description:
New York: J. J. Audubon, 1842. Lithograph, coloured by hand, by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia. One of the best images from the greatest illustrated natural history work to be produced in America during the nineteenth century. This very fine plate is from the Imperial folio edition of John James Audubon's The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, produced entirely in the United States. The production of the Quadrupeds was begun by John James Audubon and his sons at about the same time as the commercially-successful octavo edition of The Birds of America. Unlike the double-elephant folio, the Quadrupeds was produced entirely in the United States. William Reese notes that "By 1843 the Audubon family business was a well-oiled machine, involving John James, his two sons,... and various in-laws and friends. The octavo Birds was still in production when J.T. Bowen began to produce the plates for the elephant folio edition of the Quadrupeds, the largest successful color plate book project of 19th-century… Read More

`The Lynx is one of the major predators of the colder regions of Europe and Asia, feeding on deer, hares and rabbits. They inhabit coniferous forests from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe across Siberia to Northern China, and are also found in Tibet and the mountains of Central Asia. There are more isolated populations in the Iberian Peninsula, Greece, The Balkans, Turkey, northern Iran and the Caucasus; there have also been attempted reintroductions to the Alps in Central Europe. General colouration is light or reddish brown, often with a frosting of white hairs particularly in the winter coat. The coat may be spotted although this is variable; animals from the southern parts of the range are particularly heavily marked, often more brightly coloured, and smaller. Length up to 50"… Read More

The Bobcat, also known as Bay Lynx, ranges from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Named for their distinctive short, "bobbed" tails, they are approximately twice the size of a domestic cat. One of the most striking images from Elliot's magnificent work A Monograph of the Felidae or Family of Cats (London: 1878-1883) which described and pictured all the species of cats then known, and is still the most beautiful work on the subject. The work was prompted by a perceived need to resolve the confusion that had built up around the naming of the various species of Felidae, particularly amongst the smaller cats. Wolf worked from specimens provided by Elliot, who visited all the great museums and zoological societies on both sides of the Atlantic. This allowed Elliot to make a… Read More

Paris, 1801. Colour-printed stipple engraving, finished by hand, engraved by Bouquet, printed by Langlois. Very good condition. Jacques Barraband was the finest ornithological artist of his time. The son of a weaver at the Aubusson Factory, he is first mentioned as a pupil of Joseph Malaine (1745-1809), the eminent flower painter, and is known to have worked for both the Gobelin Factory and the porcelain factory of Sèvres. His most important work was undoubtedly the 300 or so drawings that he produced for François Levaillant's three great ornithological monographs, the greatest of which was the Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets (1801-1805).

1906. Etching. Printed on laid paper. Later impression from the original plate. In pristine condition. Image size: 5 1/8 x 7 ½ inches. Son of a tailor and dressmaker, Renoir moved with his family from Limoges to Paris in 1844. He was apprenticed to a porcelain manufacturer from 1854 to 1858, where he painted rococo-style decorations. In 1862-63 he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Charles Gleyre, where he met Sisley, Pissarro, Monet, and Fantin-Latour. Renoir first exhibited at the Salon in 1864 and began at about this time to work out-of-doors. Courbet, Corot, and Daubigny were important early influences, although his progress toward a more vivid and sketchy style was encouraged by the work of Monet and Manet. He participated in the first impressionist exhibition of 1874 but subsequently in only the second, third, and seventh group shows. In 1881-82 Renoir traveled to Algeria and Italy, where his exposure to ancient and Renaissance art led him to introduce into his impressionism a… Read More
