Florentiae I. P. Aere, & Typis Petri Caietani Viviani...., 1744. Large 4to, 290 x 210 mms., pp. [ii], lii, 134 [135 - 136 appendix], engraved vignette of lynx on title-page, 38 superbly engraved illustrations of plants at end, contemporary vellum, blocked in gilt on spine; no blank prelims, but a fine copy. The scientist Fabio Colonna (1567-1650) recognized that the study of leaves by themselves was not sufficient to discern or to classify them properly, especially with regard to those that could be used medicinally. An epileptic, he was drawn to the study of botany as means of finding herbs and concoctions from plants that could be used to ameliorate the symptoms and effects of epilepsy.

Description:
Edinburgh: Printed by George Ramsey and Company, for Archibald Constable..., 1809. 2 volumes in 1. 8vo, 184 x 112 mms., pp. [lxiii - lxiii [lxiv blank], 192; x, 241 [241 blank], bound in contemporary half plum calf, gilt spine; binding a little worn, but a good copy. The Quarterly Review noticed the work in 1810, beginning with this amusing observation: "Although the well-known division of authors into writers for fame - writers for bread - and writers for both is tolerably comprehensive on the whole; yet the classification, we conceive, may be conveniently extended, by adding to it the farther division, of writers from ennui.... The pupil of the School of Ennui is usually guiltless, in his outset, of any designs upon the attention of the public; but his little performances accumulate by degrees...; he induces a good-natured friend with a recital...and his good-natured friend can scarcely refuse to praise [the work]: thus encouraged, by a person of the most unequivocal and sincerity, the… Read More

London: Printed for T. Bekcet..., 1773. 4to, 207 x 153 mms., pp. [9], 10 - 65 [66 blank, 67 - 68 adverts, including half-title, engraved vignette on title-page, original boards, spine of marbled paper (slightly defective with pieces missing) The first edition was published in 1771 and received somewhat sniffily by The Monthly Review, which concluded its assessment, "On the whole, we may pronounce, of these Fables, that, with all their poetical merit, they contain more ornament than substance, more description than design, more fancy than moral." It fared little better in The Critical Review: "Dr. Langhorne certainly over rates the merits of his Fables.... The plan of these Fables is trifling; and it is ill conducted.... If smooth and lulling versification can atone for the want of manly sense, these Fables will bring their author a temporary reputation."

Pathopoli [? Leyden], Apud Gilastinum Severum 1657. 12mo, 127 x 67 mms., pp. [3] - 370 [371 "Ad Lectorem," 372, additional engraved title-page (as pages 1 - 2) 18th century calf, later reback, with title in gilt on spine. A very good copy Poggio Bracciolini (1380–1459) published this work in 1470, and it is credited with being the first book of jokes to be published. The late Dr. Barbara Bowen described it as "the most famous jokebook of the Renaissance" (One Hundred Renaissance Jokes: An Anthology [1988]), and, not surprisingly, many of the jokes are scatological or carminative. Actually, some of the jokes are not bad, and Dr. Bowen has obligingly translate the Latin, for example one about an absent-minded preacher: "Praedicabat Tibure frater parum consideratus ad populu, aggrauans multis uerbis ac destatns adulterium, dixitque inter caetera, adeo graue peccatkum, ut mallet decem uirgines cognoscere quam unicam mulierum nuptam. Description:
London: Printed for F. and C. Rivington..., 1800. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 210 x 128 mms., pp, [iv], 42, disbound; title-page almost detached. Inscribed on top margin of title-page "Earl of Altamont/ with Mr Wakefield's compliments." A pencil note attributes the work to David Wakefield, as does ESTC, but the author is more likely to be the barrister and writer on political economy Daniel Wakefield (1776 - 1846), whose mother was the author Priscilla Wakefield (1750–1832), and his elder brother was the philanthropist Edward Wakefield (1774–1854), and his nephew, Edward Gibbon Wakefield (1796–1862), founder of the National Colonisation Society. Goldsmiths', 1787. ESTC T61518 locates copies in BL, Senate House, and St. Patrick's Library; and Columbia, Harvard, Penn State, and Yale in the United States. ESTC also notes that Jeremy Bentham had a copy in his library, with ms. annotations, but doesn't give the location of the copy.

London, Printed for J. Bell..., 1799. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 170 x 99 mms., pp. [iv], 193 [194 - 196 adverts], recent half calf, marbled boards, gilt spine, green morocco; some water-staining of title-page and other leaves, but a good copy. The work is almost certainly not a translation, but a narrative by Du Bois. The Critical Review for 1799 noticed the work briefly: "The loves and adventures of Octar and Zulima form an agreeable and interesting narrative, in which are interspersed very important and useful lessons of life. After the fairy of misfortune has conducted her illustrious pupils through a series of impressive vicissitudes, they receive the splendid reward of virtuous resignation and unshaken integrity. The tale is said to have been translated at the request of a Lady; and it is much to the honour of the young knight, that the ability is not exceeded by the gallantry of his attempt. We have, in particular, remarked the spirit and felicity with which the shrewd epigrammatic… Read More

This collection of "familiar letters" was first published in 1697 and reprinted several times in the 17th century; this 1705 edition was the first to be published in the 18th century as well as the last of the early editions of any letters by Rochester. Commenting on these four editions, Dr. Nicholas Fisher notes, "These editions, while not as sumptuous as the editions published by Jacob Tonson in 1691 and 1696, seem to have been directed at the same readership, and 'not unbecome the Cabinet of the Severest Matron': the paper is of good quality, the presswork is clear and there is a significant… Read More
