A very rare richly-illustrated account of Java by the anglophone Dutch writer Augusta de Wit (1864-1939), who was born in Sumatra, and educated in both Holland and England. The present work is based upon a series of articles which de Wit wrote in English for the Singapore Straits Times, which were collected under the title Facts and Fancies about Java, and published in Singapore by the Straits Times Press in 1898. This revised second edition, published in The Hague and London, appeared in 1900 (interestingly, no copy of the first edition is recorded in UK libraries by COPAC, so presumably the print-run was small), and was followed by two subsequent editions (1905 and 1912, equally rare). Original illustrated card wrappers; pp. 153, [3], highly illustrated throughout, bilingual; new. Very rare first edition of this archaeological and pictorial documentation of the importance of the island just outside Kuwait City. The name of the island seems to be derived from the Greek word fylakio, outpost. About 5000 years ago Failaka was part of the Dilmun civilization; during and after Alexander it was Hellenized. - 1000 copies were produced, 800 were kept by the Emir's Office, 80 copies were for the author, 120 for the General Secretary of the National Council of Culture, Arts and Letters. This particular copy is inscribed by the author, an eminent Kuwaiti anthropologist, archaeologist, collector and historian.

A fine original pen, ink, and watercolour illustration by Harold Jones, image size circa 12.5 x 15.5cm, with black hand-ruled border by the artist, signed in full "Harold Jones" in ink within the image, painted on white stock affixed to greyish laid paper, neatly presented in a hand-cut acid-free cream mount, mount size circa 41 x 30.5cm; in fresh and very attractive condition with one tiny 3mm raised blister laid to the surface as an apparent artist's correction.

Very rare second and enlarged edition of a top-secret military publication, with the improved map. This book reports on the ups and downs of the Saudi dynasty based in Najd, the expansion and vaining of power during the 19th century, the first appearance of the Ottomans in 1818, who were driven from the country in 1831. In his Preface the editor claims that "heretofore no attempt has been made on a similar scale to provide in a single work information about fishing in all parts of the world." This fascinating survey of the work of the visionary fly-tier J.C. Mottram was the last work, published posthumously, of Tim Benn, publisher, angler, founder of the Creel Press and longtime friend of Sotheran's. It is a typically lavish and stylish production, while the text has the authority and enthusiasm that distinguished its writer. Original publisher's half dark red calf-backed red cloth boards, decorative endpapers, flat spine lettered longitudinally with decorative gilt lettering, all edges rough; pp. [x], 11-76 + [vi], printed throughout on fine Italian Fabriano hand-made paper; with black-and-white illustrations and tailpieces throughout; a near fine copy with small rubbing to spine extremities and corner tips. First edition, de luxe, signed by both author and artist: one of only 80 such copies. This volume was printed in a total limitation of 500 copies of which 20 "Specials" were printed on Kozu Japanese Paper, 80 (as here) on Italian hand-made paper, and the remainder on other fine quality stock. All were numbered. The work was designed by Ferruccio Pasqui and printed in Florence by Corradino Mori. The delicate line drawings, regrettably, are rather weakly produced on the heavy and rather resistant hand-made stock.
