A rare 1860s photo-illustrated broadside presenting the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons, featuring a view of the college and nine images of its professors. The college had by this time merged with Columbia University's medical faculty. The central image is a view of the college building, with its name and the year of its founding (1807) visible above the entrance (this building was first occupied beginning in 1856). A broadsheet advertising anti-Catholic lectures, along with a public challenge to Catholic Priests, by an influential "escaped nun" and possible KKK ally whose sensational lectures fueled xenophobia and nativist politics at the turn of the 20th Century. This advertising brochure promotes lectures to be given in Johnstown, Pennsylvania by Margaret L. Shepherd (1859-1903), who posed as an escaped nun and stirred anti-Catholic nativist furor in the U.S., Canada, and Australia during the wave of Catholic immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth Centuries. Leavenworth, Kansas, 1901. Platinum print photograph, 19 x 24 cm plus mount. Early pencil notes on verso identifying individuals. Pictured here are the men involved in crushing a mutiny carried out by 356 inmates at the Kansas State Penitentiary Coal Mine on 17 March 1901. They are shown proudly posing with their pistols, all but one in uniform, apparently standing in front of the prison, two of them African Americans. The men, identified on the verso, are as follows: Back row (l-r): Mr. Thompson (Deputy warden), William Duckett, George G. Hannon, Pearl Tipton, Lewis Bowers, John W. Newell. Front row (l-r): Henry Stauf (a store keeper), George W. Boner, and Dave Welch. At the beginning of 1901, some 280 convicts who worked in the penitentiary's coal mines went on strike. Old Orchard Beach, Maine, [ca 1880's]. 4" x 7" albumen print cabinet card, photographer's stamp on verso. A appealing image of the Fiske House, a five and a half story grand hotel in Old Orchard Beach Maine, with wrap-around porches on two floors and double stairs to the beach. The hotel was rebuilt in 1882 after an 1875 fire, then destroyed again by fire in 1907. CONDITION: Very good, light foxing on mount, light toning and rubbing.

[Maine, ca. 1895]. Stereoview photograph, 3" x 3", on 3.5" x 7" paperboard mount. Ink inscription on lower right: "Foot Bridge at Rumford Maine." CONDITION: Very good, strong tonality, slight curve to mount. An early and remarkably vivid stereoview photograph of the suspension footbridge at Rumford Falls, Maine, over the Androscoggin River. Some twenty pedestrians, at various distances from the camera, can be seen crossing it. Built in 1895, the bridge was removed in 1930 following the construction of the Memorial Bridge.
