Description:
The book is bound in blue cloth with a vignette of Magellan's ship, the Victoria, stamped in gilt at the center of the front cover. The spine is badly sun faded, and there is minor fading across the top inch of the back cover. There is a small bookplate (blank) at the top left corner of the first paste-down page. Text is otherwise clean with no extraneous writing or marks. "The Fifth Letter" is No. 40 in the first series of publications by the Hakluyt Society between 1847 and 1873. It includes not only the letter from Cortes, dated 1526, but the society's 1868 annual report.

This soft-cover edition (no dust jacket) was printed in 1943 in Cairo. In it, the New Zealand photographer descrbies the making of documentary films during World War II. Lord Moyne, deputy minister of state, says in the foreword: "Every family giving its young to the Services has a deep personal concern in the war news. Mr. McIntyre has helped to build up the service of war documentary films which have brought the war to the minds of millions for more vividly than would have been possible by words alone." This copy is badly age tanned but remains in good condition. Minor shelf wear to the cover. Binding remains tight. Interior pages clean. First edition, later printing with errata on last page.

Binding tight; no extraneous marks, underlinings, or writing. Cover spine badly faded. There is a one-inch tear at the bottom of the photograph of a doll; other black and shite photographs are in very good condition. There is a colored bookplate on the first free fly leaf that seems to indicate the book was once owned by succeeding generations.

This volume is one of three which grew out of a study of Black culture on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. This book deals with certain major aspects of dialect, folk songs, and folklore.
