Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul where two of the four novels released in his lifetime - This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful and Damned - were polished for publication. His third novel, The Great Gatsby, was pitched to his editor, Maxwell Perkins, in a letter written from White Bear Lake, the resort community he frequented as a youth and lived in as a young man. In addition, a score of his best short stories - "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz" and "Winter Dreams" - were penned in Minnesota. Includes a detailed guide and a map of Fitzgerald's Summit Avenue homes and haunts, as well as numerous textual photographs and illustrations. Inscribed by both Page and Koblas on the title page. Salisbury: Printed by J. Easton for T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, 1796. Hardcover. Very good. The uncommon first printing of the William Coxe edition, with notes and the life of the author by the Rector of Bemerton. Dedicated to William, Duke of Cumberland, the third son of King George II, these moralizing tales are often satiric in tone and were originally composed to educate and amuse the six year old prince. A particular favorite is "The Elephant and the Bookseller" (Fable 10). 12mo: xii, 72, 249, [2] p. with engraved decorations throughout. In a later one-quarter brown calf over marbled paper binding, with gilt stamping and five raised bands. Light toning to the contents, with a period ink ownership signature to the top edge of the title page; otherwise very good.

Told in an elegant style, Jean de la Fontaine's (1621-95) charming animal fables depict sly foxes and scheming cats, vain birds and greedy wolves, all of which subtly express his penetrating insights into French society. Illustrated with drawings by Louise Emile Adan and etchings by Paul Edme Le Rat. Small octavo, two volumes. In one-half brown morocco over marbled paper bindings, with gilt stamping, five raised bands, marbled endpapers, and a ribbon marker. The original wrappers are bound in. Some minor scuffing to the boards; otherwise very good.

An archive of photographs, ledgers, canceled checks, legal documents and other business and personal records from a Stillwater, New York family who feuded over the disposition of a lumber and coal business at the turn of the last century. The troubles began following the death in 1898 of Stephen Wood Sr., the owner of Stephen Woods Sons Lumber and Coal in Stillwater, New York. The business continued on under the direction of his two sons, Stephen and Edward, who were named executors of the estate. Two daughters were not included in the settlement. The sons cared for their widower mother, Temmy, but there was no formal settlement of the estate. When Edward, who took care of the books, died in 1908, matters became complicated and the family found itself in court because Edward's wife, Louise C. First published in 1918, this passionate memoir of youth on the Argentinean pampas inspired Ernest Hemingway, among many others. The lower half of the binding is of rough hide in which the hair still remains, the upper half is of smooth rawhide with the title branded in, the sections are bound together and along the edges with rawhide things.
