Description:
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Uncommon autograph musical quotation from one of the composer's Fairy Tales, Op. 34 #1, signed ("Nicolas Medtner"), consisting of three bars of music marked "Largamente , cantando" on a hand-ruled staff. On an album page (7.6 x 8 cm), London, 16/II/1928. In very fine condition, mounted to a slightly larger sheet. Medtner was one of the very last Romantic composer-pianists, his career being overshadowed by his close contemporaries Skryabin and Rakhmaninov. Like them, he placed the piano at the heart of his creative activity, but unlike them he tempered a Russian spirit with musical thought more firmly based in the Western classical tradition.

A fine and scarce example of this early work.Best known for his luscious paintings of pies, ice-cream cones and gumball machines, California artist Wayne Thiebaud was an avid and prolific draftsman from the moment he began his career as an illustrator and cartoonist.  Associated with Pop art because of his interest in objects of mass culture, he endows even the most banal, everyday scenes with a sense of poetry and nostalgia.  His early works, executed during the fifties and sixties, slightly predate the works of the classic pop artists like Warhol, Oldenburg and Lichtenstein, suggesting that Thiebaud may have had an influence on the movement.

Edges slightly creased, overall fine. Stamped by the photographer on the verso of each and identified in his hand. Bernstein is shown conducting during a rehearsal, variously in motion with his baton, pointing in the direction of the camera, gesturing with glasses in hand, expressing his intentions with his facial expressions, deeply invested in the act of music making. An extraordinary set. Ken Regan was born and grew up in the Bronx and studied journalism at Columbia and attended New York University's Film School. Though he covered riots and demonstrations in the United States, and wars in Vietnam and later in the Persian Gulf and Bosnia, he was especially known for his photographs of musicians, including those taken in 1975 when he did back to back tours with Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, later… Read More

Light speckling to the black cloth boards, moderate foxing and toning, a few tiny nicks to edges of dj, else fine. A fine signed volume from the writer best known for her novels, poetry, and opera libretti marked by a distinctive, playfully experimental, sometimes nonsensical use of language.  The Stein-Virgil Thomson opera Four Saints was first performed at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT on Feb. 7, 1934 and opened on Broadway 2 weeks later. Revolutionary in a number of ways, the libretto has more to do with the sounds of the words than with presenting a coherent narrative. The portrayal of the European saints by an all-black cast was the first of its kind, and the sets, designed by Florine Stettheimer, included cellophane… Read More

Another copy of this book is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.Kara Walker is best known for her controversial large-scale black silhouette cut-outs which are, in this book, miniaturized. Her use of silhouettes is significant and ironic as she juxtaposes traditional Victorian silhouettes with depictions of violence, hyper-sexuality, and racism. Walker's work deals directly with African American history in the Antebelleum South, contributes to current dialogues on the representation of Black identities, and speaks to the way that the… Read More
