Description:
New York: Harper & Row, 1968. First edition. Hardcover. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Subtitled "A Fictional Memoir" and categorized as fiction, the book is semi-autobiographical. In a brief "Note to the Reader" in the opening pages, Exley writes: "Though the events in this book bear similarity to those of that long malaise, my life...I have drawn freely from the imagination and adhered only loosely to the pattern of my past life. To this extent, and for this reason, I ask to be judged a writer of fantasy." A sardonic account of mental illness, alcoholism, insulin shock therapy and electroconvulsive therapy, and the black hole of sports fandom.

In this beautifully produced third issue of the international art/fashion collectible Fashion Magazine, the acclaimed American photographer Alec Soth plays Editor-in-Chief, Advertising Director and sole photographic contributor--to quietly mesmerizing results. Featuring exquisite printing, unexpected gatefolds, special inks, varnishes and paper changes, this magazine-as-artist's-book-as-sociological-study-as-tongue-vehicle contains some of the most riveting work being produced by a young photographer today. Soth explains: "While Fashion Magazine has a single photographer-author, it's still a magazine, not a book. So it doesn't follow my usual mode of slow, solitary production. It's collaboration. The ideas for the collaboration were formulated very quickly. I was approached by the folks at the Paris office of Magnum to work on this issue late last year. I immediately said… Read More

Description:
Seattle: University of Washington Press, 2021. First edition. Hardcover. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket with a store sticker to front panel (University Bookstore). Inscribed on the title page by Gastineau "Go Dawgs! / Mike Gastineau." In 1984 the University of Washington Huskies won every game but one, ranking second in national polls. For most coaches, such a season would be a career pinnacle. But for Don James second place motivated him to set aside what he knew about football and rethink the game. James made radical changes to his coaching philosophy, from recruitment to becoming one of the first college teams willing to blitz on any down and in any situation. His new approach initially failed, yet it finally culminated in one of the most explosive teams in college football history. In Fear No Man, Mike Gastineau recounts the riveting story of Don James and the national championship team he built. Undefeated, the 1991 Huskies outscored opponents by an average of 31 points per game on their way… Read More

Description:
Iowa City: University of Iowa Press, 1988. First edition. Hardcover. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. This lucidly written study gives a careful and detailed reading of all of Pynchon's fiction from the early stories to Gravity's Rainbow. Seed stresses the intricacy of Pynchon's narratives and discusses such issues as his parody of myth, influences from the Beats, and various uses of comedy and American culture. While taking previous criticism into account, Seed reinterprets Pynchon's texts from an original perspective, showing the continuities, obsessions, and deeper generative concerns that run through all of Pynchon's writing. Seed concludes his analysis with a chapter relating the themes of Pynchon's writing to the novels for which he has written promotional comments. A unique appendix includes the text of a letter written by Pynchon discussing the research for his third novel. 268 pages.

A very good plus copy in blue cloth over boards (magazine photo of Eliot stuck to the front endpaper) in a very good minus clipped jacket with closed tears and price-clipped (bottom). Peter Pendrey. 4to.The film version of Murder in the Cathedral, designed and produced by Mr. George Hoellering in close co-operation with the author of the play, is itself a new and important development of the art of the cinema. We believe that it deserves to be commemorated by a new kind of book of the film. This volume contains the complete scenario, including, with a few minor cuts and alterations, the original text of the play, together with the new scenes written specially for the film by Mr. Eliot, and not elsewhere published. It is also abundantly illustrated, with photographs of sets, details of costume and architectural decoration, including reproductions in colour and reproductions of drawings and sketches made in preparation for the film. Description:
New York: Atlantic Monthly Press. First edition. Hardcover. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Card laid in "As this book was coming off press, one of the Navy SEALs who was on the raid on the Abbottabad compound published a book in which he gave an account of the shooting of bin Laden that differs slightly from the one that appears on p.229 of this book. He says that as he and two other SEALs were climbing the stairs to the third floor, a man stuck his head out from a doorway. Two shots from a suppressed gun were fired. He then entered the room to see bin Laden "with blood and brains spilling out of the side of his skull." He and another SEAL fired several rounds into his body until he was motionless. I assume this account is accurate though the account here was reviewed at the highest level of Special Forces Command and confirmed as accurate before the book went to press. All subsequent editions of this book will have a slightly expanded version of this addendum worked into the text,---Mark Bowden.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1987. First edition. Hardcover. A very good plus copy in an unclipped clean dust jacket. Here, the author has re-imagined the story of the Trojan War, and retells it from the point of view of Kassandra the beautiful and tormented royal princess of Troy. The story unfolds in a new and daring way, from the judgment of Paris, the abduction of Helen (here, not the wicked adultress of legend, but a warm and loving woman, devoted to Paris and their children) and the summoning of the Greek armies by Agamemnon, Helen's enraged brother-in-law, to the final tragedy of the city's destruction, fated by the gods, and by the willful pride of its male leaders.

Description:
New York: Harper & Row, 1973. First edition. Hardcover. A near fine copy in a very good plus jacket. The first person is the narrator who appears throughout, guiding the reader with one hand while throwing sand in his eyes with the other, since all of this is full of contrivances and connivances and interpolations designed to show that what one invents or experiences is perhaps the same thing. Author Wright is an English professor and so is timid Ralph Hathorne Burr who may or may not be the narrator after he becomes the "protagonist of a novel about murder." In fact, hypothecating here, deviating there, one is left wondering about the murder itself -- is it that of the old woman whom at first he stones, with fossils, in a wood -- Burnet Woods of course -- or a man who is killed at the same site or perhaps even his wife Cynthia, whom he permitted to die of her own hand? Other things do happen -- he becomes involved with a young woman half his age who fulfills his "sectsual needs" and then impels him… Read More

A breathtaking collection of flower photographs by Mapplethorpe. All in color, some of his final work. Though his best known flower images were in black and white, this book reveals his genius in color. The photographs here range from images of the early 1980s to many taken in the months before his death. The latter, in particular, are astounding in their intensity; here one finds both erotic drama and absolute clarity of composition, Mapplethorpe's gift at its most bold and uncompromising.

Description:
London: Secker & Warburg, 1965. First UK edition. Hardcover. A very good copy with a binding flaw to the bottom (at spine) of pages 109-114 in a very good plus dust jacket. Richard Chopping. The first novel written by this British illustrator best known for painting the dust jackets of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels starting with 'From Russia With Love'. The Fly was recommended to its publisher by Angus Wilson, where David Farrar found it "a perfectly disgusting concoction". Edited by Giles Gordon who said the book was "Sufficciently sordid to appeal to voyeurs, and if Chopping were to adorn it with one of his famous dust jackets it could be a 'succes de scandale; and so it proved." The dust jacket depicts a huge fly peering into an human eyeball (and I wager they do not see 'eye to eye'!) Chopping, during the 1940s established himself as an author and illustrator of natural history and children's books. Bound in bright blue cloth with silver spine lettering.

One of only 100 hardbound copies self-published by Muthard, and printed by Conveyor Arts. A book of black and white photographs that tell a story. Of further interest is that he self-released it at the New York Art Book Fair under his own name (at his own booth with a stack of his books). Of course it helps to have great content but also a well-made product like this book; white cloth, heavy paper, full page images, the book itself makes a statement.
