Description:
Cincinnati: Lincoln & Co. Printers, 1831. Hardcover. Good. Full tree-calf leather binding with gilt decorations and lettering to spine, 8" x 5", 400 pp., frontispiece, a few in-text woodcuts, charts, etc. Leather worn at edges, large section of front board not uniformly aged, foxing to pages, a few stains to some pages, generally good to very good condition. "Many families have owed their prosperity full as much to the propriety of female management, as to the knowledge and activity of the father." (p. 156) This sentence sums up so much of the importance of cookbooks of this era! Several chapters involve farm-work, but much of it is still relevant to cookery: from a detailed layout of a kitchen garden to instructions on harvesting, butchering, making evaporated milk, the restoration of tainted meat (no, thanks), and the use of herbs and minerals in a variety of medicines and farm & home uses. The cooking recipes are most thorough about meat, and seem influenced by British cookery.

Fanfare for Tin Trumpets is her second novel (and her first successful one, according to Sharp); the New York Times review declared: "Light novels dealing with the enthusiasms and disillusionments of youth are so frequently sentimentalized or incredibly burlesqued that it is a pleasure to find so neat a balance of…
