London. Half Morocco, pebbled cloth. Very Good. 1890s theatrical cheesecake! N.d., circa 1890. 4to. 42 original costume designs, signed A. Chasemore, rendered in watercolors and pen-and-ink, all mounted on rectos of leaves. Many of the designs have penciled in notes. Archibald Chasemore, we believe, was a successful costume designer of the period. The V&A has a collection of 22 of his theatrical costume designs. Designs often have inked or penciled notes written on them, which can allude to the actor for whom the particular costume was intended. One can discern that the costumes were designed with a thought of showcasing the ahem, cosmetic and physical virtues of this actor. The objective was clearly glamour and sex appeal. Productions include a show based on the legend of Robin Hood in which it would appear all the major roles were to be played by women. Here visually on display are the physical ideal of nineties woman. Moderate wear.

Roma: Giorgio Placho, 1722. Second edition. Full Sheep. Fine. Small 4to. (24 by 19 cm, 9.75 by 7.25 inches. [16], 177, [1] pp, including half-title. With two engraved frontispieces and 151 engraved plates of musical instruments and their players. One plate is folding. Some of the instruments are fanciful. Instruments also include non-European instruments. The instruments were in the collection of the Collegium Romanum where Bonanni was a professor of mathematics. Contemporary sprinkled sheep with gilt decoration and raised bands on spine. Some rubbing to spine, more pronounced on bands. Abrasion by upper front joint. Some scuffs on boards. Interior is tight, and such soiling as there is on the leaves is light, occasional and inobtrusive. There was an inscripion at the bottom of title page that someone removed and in doing so left some abrasion and pinprick holes, again, not obtrusive.

Introduction by Jeremias Muller. Some soilage on boards, and some bowing of boards. Spine sunned. Interior clean and tight.

Firenze: David Passigli, 1845-6. First Edition. Full Morocco. Near Fine. Uncommon title with 100 bright and hand-colored plates depicting major figures and events of Italian history. Each plate accompanies generally eight to twelve text pages relating a tale or biography of the figure(s) depicted. The articles are ornamented with lovely ornate borders which vary in color and design from one piece to the next. The work itself was issued at a time when Italian consciousness was finally being roused with the first rumblings for unification, which would finally come to fruition two decades later, but it is significant that in this work the heros and heroines highlighted come from all over the Italian peninsula, including Naples, Venice, etc. then separate kingdoms, principalities, or under Austrian or Church control. Leipzig: Industrie Comptoir, 1801 or 1802. Cloth. Very Good. Very scarce hand-colored plate book of German costume. 8vo. 78 pp. 25 hand-colored plates (plates are not in order, but all are present). Colas 2667. Lipperheide 654. The costumes are from the Early Renaissance period, or the early 16th century, and all represent court dress. The figures in the plates have an austerity of expression and modeling that is in harmony with works of art from the period(s) depicted, and much of the beauty of the plates flows from this restraint. This copy combines what were two installments and is complete. Contemporary cloth spine, over marbled boards. Light wear to the binding. Text leaves have light foxing, not disconcerting. Plates have occasional light soiling, but overall impression is clean, and all the plates remain attractive.

Oblong, 21 by 30 cm. 92 numbered leaves with content, with log entries, more or less statistical, on all the versos, and pictures and/or original drawings, mostly mounted, on 58 rectos, with some additional loose material. (129 numbered leaves in all.) Several of the log pages have mounted photos obscuring the log, as it is clear that this game book was at some point re-purposed to be a more general album, with some emphasis on sports, including also fishing, foxhunting and sailing, but also there are two pages of photos from South Africa, with photos of native tribesmen, ostriches, a hut, Cecil Rhodes house, etc. 13 original works of art -- watercolored, pencil, pen and ink -- in addition to numerous painted fish hook and fly vignettes, these sometimes done directly onto the page. With 15 hand-colored plates, drawings "taken on the spot". Gamonia was intended as a guide or handbook on the maintenance of a hunting preserve, or how best to set up farmland or woodland so as to optimize hunting or shooting potential. Written in a comparatively breezy or conversational style, its words of advice are still appreciated and read -- it remains a valuable reference, a classic on the subject. But without question the work is treasured above all else for its wonderful plates depicting sportsmen of the Regency Era -- plates much reproduced, framed and emulated. The orginal contemporary morocco has attractive border decoration on the boards, the gilding of which remains bright. Condition: heavy-ish soiling of yellow wraps. Corners coiled over slightly. Two line inked note on blank page near front. Light wear besides.

Very Good. N.d., circa 1940s. Advertising giveaway (one assumes) of Monger Enterprises, Memphis TN. (This company's name, address and phone are printed on the marble base.) The figurine is a sculptural rendering of a popular comic strip character of the day. The base is 8 cm square, and the item is 9 cm from the bottom to the top of the "Gay Philosopher"'s rumpled hat. The sculpture appears to have been made of a composite material. Some of the colors have been lightly rubbed, but it remains a colorful figurine. Felt bottom to the base.

As fine a folk art Gebetbuch manuscript as one is bound to find, with its artist's identity given and precisely dated to the mid-eigtheenth century. 12mo. 16 by 10 cm. Three title pages, two frontises, 213 pages paginated. 21 pages which are fully painted, or essentially so, with many other pages with substantial illustration, including ornate decorative motives, painted cameos, etc. The style is peasant Rococo, with seraphs and human figures striking the various graceful postures that characterize Rococo paintings of the most august type. Generally the human visages are done with a naivete that may speak of the artistic limitation of the artist but which redounds with charm to us. A magnificent example of Folk Art and Peasant Rococo decoration. 12mo. 17.5 by 10 cm. 246 pp. Created by Thoma of Hardeck, in Bavaria, for his betrothed, Maria Dorothea Seidlerin of Maiersreith. Hardeck is now a district of Bad Neualbenreuth which is by the Czech border, and we assume that Maierreith was a nearby village now also absorbed by a larger municipality. This manuscript prayer book abounds in art. It is tricky and elusive to give a precise accounting of the quantity, given the subjectivity of distinguishing ornamental vignettes, which are generally repeated and generally are stereotypical watercolored decoration in such manuscript prayer books, such as flowers and foliage, and pages dominated by artwork that can claim more originality in its actualization, even if the subject matter is that which one finds in virtually every such manuscript prayer book and ubiquitous generally in Catholic literature and artwork. Netherlands and/or Nuremburg, 1823. Faux book box. Booklet with wraps. Very Good. Scarce, with the only copy found on OCLC First Search at Indiana University. Faux book box containing booklet on one side and schraubthaler housed in well on opposing side. The box measures 92 by 76 by 19 mm. The booklet, 73 by 53 mm, and is 15 pages, bound in orange wraps. The coin is 45 mm in diameter. The tin coin has a relief portrait on Pius VII on one side, of Mary holding the infant Jesus, on the other face. The inside of the metal, front and back, have paste down text in German. Within the coin, which you unscrew, are housed eight disks, each featuring a hand-colored engraving with captioning below, also all in German. The sixteen scenes are numbered above, and they tell of the pope's saga during the Napoleonic era. Rabier's color illustrations would seem to prefigure the anthropomorphic charm and acuity of Warner Brothers' Loony Toons. Text is minimal and not critical to enjoyment of the cartoon-like format, with some frames half and even full page, which measures 12.5 by 9.5 inches. Some shelfwear to boards, with moderate soilage and some minor losses to paper on board along edges. Heavy stock paper with toning but clean otherwise. Tight binding. A very good copy overall.

Important early study of geese, with both academic and aesthetic interest. Nissen 30. A few small stain spots on front cover. Scattered light foxing within. Still very good.

Wien (Vienna): Anton Pichler, 1817. Half Morocco. Good. 4to. (27 by 21 cm, 10.5 by 8 inches.) 199, [1] pp., plus 48 copper engraved plates, including three that are folding and are more than double the size of the standard plates in their width. The plates, depicting scenes of Roman history, are full of gore, drama, action. They are rendered in the historical style that might be associated with the Baroque but was still certainly going strong in the ambitious canvasses of the early nineteenth century. The half morocco is rubbed along the joints and dry and scuffed elsewhere. The marbled boards are scuffed and have typical edgewear. The leaves are toned with some light soiling. A dampstain affects the margins of a bunch of pages, not affecting the plates.
