16cm, boards, rebacked with black tape, illustrated, small publisher's catalogue laid in in front, 763 pp., plus 24 pp. street index dated 1827. Boards are a bit worn at extremities, top hinge is cracked, one page from publisher's catalogue loose, first map with some crude tape repairs at the top, map is a little browned and soiled with minor chips and tears, contents with a little foxing, aging, and browning; good overall. This is the 17th edition of this somewhat scarce Paris guidebook. The book is in English, and has 15 plates and two folding maps. The title page indicates a description of Palace Park and Versailles is included, and "a plan for viewing Paris in a week." OCLC.

Carpenter (1877-1949) was born in Wiles-Barr, Pennsylvania, and would become prominent industrialist. As an executive for DuPont helped turn the company into a modern scientific company, and diversify from gunpowder and explosives. He was also an avid hunter and big game hunter, and a member of the Boone and Crockett Club. As a director of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences he went on many trips to Africa to collect big game animals for the museum's dioramas. This work is essentially a sequel to Game Trails from Alaska to Africa, which was published a couple of years earlier. Billiards is a game with a very long history that actually started as an outdoor activity. Around the fifteenth century the game seems to have moved indoors, and the game reached America with English and Dutch settlers. However, Michael Phelan is credited with making the game popular in this country. He is often referred to as the father of American billiards, and his work on billiards was the first American book on the subject. His work was very influential in establishing rules and standards of behavior for the sport, and he became the first weekly columnist for billiards. He was even the first to win a major stake match ($15,000) in the United Sates. The present work contains a lot of important information on the game, including diagrams on how to make shots. Pamphlet, 8vo, original printed wrappers, illustrated front cover, 24 pp. Rear cover detached, some chips to spine and extremities, normal aging. This political songster includes a number of pro Garfield sons, including Boatman Jim, Garfield’s at the Front, and Hurrah for General Garfield. There is even a song about the national debt ($6.2 billion), which according to the song reflects a lot of expenditures related to the "War of the Rebellion."

Pamphlets, small 8vo, disbound, 2, [1], [1], 2, 4, 5 pp. Completely disbound series of orders, removed, some chipping where removed, normal aging and browning. A series of six General Orders from the Adjutant General's Office (L. Thomas), concerning the treatment of prisoners. The first orders relates to the process of handling and treatment of prisoners of war, including appropriate documentation on transfers to prison depots. The final order (191) includes a list of prisoners of war (Union soldiers) exchanged with Southern soldiers on November 11, 1862 at Aiken's Landing.

Pamphlet, small 8vo, removed stitched, 22, {XIII} pp. Some normal aging and browning; middle crease, otherwise very good. This pamphlet provides a list of offices in the U.S. military on January 1, 1871. It is organized to reflect the acts of Congress dated March 3, 1869, and July 15, 1870. The pamphlet includes the date of commission for each officer. George Armstong Custer is listed on page six

12mo, period tree calf, spine tooled in gilt, morocco lettering piece, marbled endpapers, illustrated with 6 folding maps, [4], 356 pp. Just a bit of rubbing to joints and extremities, old ink signature to title; otherwise very good to near fine. This is a charming little gazetteer with folding maps of easter and western hemispheres, Africa , Asia, North and South America (on one sheet), and Europe. Thousands of locations are described, from Aa (a river in Dutch Brabant) to Zwoli (a town in the United Provinces). On the verso of the front free endpaper is an early 7 line notation regarding the measurement of longitude.

8vo, one sheet, printed on both sides. Even toning and aging, small closed tear to the upper margin; otherwise very good. This is a rather scarce government document that informs the military that the "Thirteenth Amendment" has passed, and slavery is officially abolished. Article XIII states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for a crime, whereby the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This document is signed in type by William H. Seward (1801-1872) as the Secretary of State. Congress would follow with a Civil Rights Act of 1866 to give African Americans the same rights as all citizens, but this small printed document presenting the essence of the "Thirteenth Amendment" is an important piece of history. 12mo, attractive vellum binding, inked title on spine, illustrated with 19 folding maps, 444 pp. Slight edgewear, but binding nice and clean, laid in bookplate, rubber stamp name on endpaper, a little foxing and aging, a couple of maps with fold tears, Europe with archival tape repair, America with tear, but not substantial, occasional map creasing; otherwise very good plus overall. Claude Buffier (1661-1737) was a French philosopher and cartographer. This little atlas contains 19 handsome folding engraved maps. The list of maps includes America, France, Italy, Spain, Britain, Greece, Africa, and Asia. Despite knowledge to the contrary at the time this atlas was published, the map of America still shows California as an Island, and Florida as kind of a stub. The map of Africa is also interesting (page 208), showing some of the old names for places on that continent.

Wrappers were probably generic, and attached to the map that was needed, which is why the used a paper label for title. Wrapper has some significant wear at extremities, especially the spine area, but still in tact; one small split at fold, but map is bright and clean and in very good plus condition. There is no date on this map, but it is likely from the 1920s. A very attractive tourist map that has considerable detail, and includes an inset showing population density in Germany.

4to, paper, disbound, illustrated with 34 plates, including two large folding maps, 327, [3] pp. Disbound, some pages loose, spine gone, covers torn and detached, original covers are partially gone and torn, but later covers appear to have been included (not attached), preliminaries chipped, torn and loose, some loose pages, balance of contents in very good condition. Folding maps, despite a few folds are also in very good shape, but no pocket for large folding typographical map at the rear. Richly illustrated work on Alaska, which includes a 33" x 47" topographical map, and a 34" x 23" map of the Mt. McKinley region. There are other smaller maps (some in color), and many early photographs of Alaska.

Original wrappers, elephant folio, illustrated 32 pp. plus maps/ Wrappers are a bit stained, soiled, and creased, some chips and small tears to edges, normal aging; otherwise good. A little internal staining, but contents in pretty good shape, Color maps in the rear are rather attractive and provide some good detail on the subject. WILL REQUIRE EXTRA POSTAGE.

Folding 15 panel map of the geological map of Switzerland, cloth and paper or board. Some aging and minor soiling, a couple of small stains, pencil notation on first panel; otherwise very good. Interesting and attractive, and appears to be published during WWII.

Pamphlet, 8vo, uncut and unbound, 9 pp. Paper with slightly uneven middle fold, some minor folds and chips at edges, slight foxing, creasing, and staining; otherwise very good. This pamphlet presents the views of the Georgia Legislature concerning the use of funds to support the objectives of the American Colonization Society. The American Colonization Society was founded in 1817 with the goal of sending free African Americans back to Africa. The organization even established a colony for that purpose in 1822. However, not all parties supported this objective, and it seems like the Georgia Legislature didn't like the idea of Federal money being used to support the objectives of the African Colonization Society.

Folio, illustrated cloth, illustrated, 26, [2], 152 pp. Some slight soiling to binding, a few edge tips folded in the corner, old pricing stamp on front endpaper; otherwise very good or better. This is a repent of the 1928 edition, which features a prominent collection of facsimile plates from 15th century German books. The collection includes plates from Biblia Latina, Biblia Germatica, Chronik der Sachen, and the Nuremburg Chronicle.

Folio, cloth, printed title on top cover, and spine label, illustrated. Spine label very faded with a couple of chip[s, cover with some wear spots, especially along edges, tape hinge repairs along inside boards and endpapers, cigar rubber stamp on top margin of all plates, does not interfere with image, normal aging, contents clean, overall about very good. A great book for boxing fans has pictures of some great boxers in American history including John L. Sullivan, James J. Corbett, Peter Jackson, Paddy Ryan, Bob Fitzsimmons, and Tom Hyer.
