In later half morocco with corners by Sangorski & Sutcliffe; original wrappers and errata slip bound in. The binding is quite nice with only light wear; the wrappers have minor chips; generally a clean copy of a scarce book with postcard written and signed by Anderson in response to a request for a copy of her book. A remarkably uncommon biography of the Confederate General written by his grandniece. Prior to the Civil War, Watie was an outspoken proponent of voluntary Cherokee removal to what is not Oklahoma, in fact he was a signatory to the Treaty of New Echota, a divisive act and condemned by many Cherokee. Watie migrated to Oklahoma while other members of the Cherokee nation refused and were eventually forcibly removed to the west over what has become known as the "Trail of Tears." As issued, in olive cloth with title in gold on the front cover and the spine and silver medallion deboss on the front cover; frontispiece portrait and six maps are present as called for. Spotting and soiling, primarily to the front cover, otherwise, only light rubbing to the binding; gilt top edge is a bit soiled; small, 1/2" closed tear to the fore-edge of the all of the preliminary leaves including the frontispiece, as well as the first two leaves of the body of the text; owner stamp to the title pages; foxing to the frontispiece and adjacent leaves, otherwise contents are largely clean but for one marginal note in pencil correcting a regiment number; a few leaves roughly opened. Nevins calls this "[a] rather brief, but defensive, summary of Johnston's life; Johnston personally selected Hughes as his biographer" CWB II, 66. Dornbusch II, 2875.

A remarkably nice copy; spine and board edges only a trifle sunned otherwise very little wear to speak of; a solidly bound copy; front free endpaper and first blank have a vertical crease through the leaf; a bit of foxing to the frontispiece, tissue guard, and title page, otherwise contents are clean and fresh. Nevins notes that this "includes copious extracts from Lee's private letters" CWB II, 71.
