A facsimile of the extremely rare 1578 first edition of De Jode's Speculum. From the blurb: "Active as a publisher since 1555, De Jode was, when he tried to issue his atlas, hampered by the fact that Ortelius had already obtained a monopoly for his work. From a cartographical point of view De Jode's Atlas is certainly as important as Ortelius' publication. Many of the maps are of a new conception and they were beautifully engraved by the brothers Van Doetecom: 28 of the maps relate to the German Empire. From the introduction: "The subject of the connection between Garsington and Oxford University goes back a very long way. At least eight colleges have at one time or another held property in Garsington. Three of them, namely Brasenose, Christ Church and Queen's, still hold property in the village, and the five others which are on record as property-holders in Garsington are Exeter, Magdalen, St John's, Trinity and Wadham. From the sixteenth century some of the Presidents of Trinity, who were also Rectors of Garsington, were concerned about the village and its inhabitants, and they are recorded here.
