Coventry: Unpublished, 1942. Second World War Midlands-based study of the history of gas in warfare and the best ways to counter and deal with its renewed use over Britain. Small notebook (10x16cm) bound in grey cloth covered card, contained within an anonymous black folder. Author's signature on the front pastedown: 'A F Wilson 8 Stychedale Ave, Coventry'. Opposite an Index of contents with 'folio' numbers: 56ff - 112 pages of manuscript text in a mixture of pencil and inks with red for highlighting and diagrams - Wilson writes across the whole. The text is begins with the History of Gas Warfare, persistence of gas on the battlefield, classification of gases and their effects on troops, conditions for using gas and the chilling 'Value of Gas in warfare'. There are notes on Gas duties, respirators and decontamination. Unusually Wilson writes across the whole opening of each double page. London: J Dawks for N Rolls, 1697. Nicolas Cox's compendium of hunting, hawking, fowling, and fishing lore in one of the three variant imprints published in 1697. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Contemporary boards, sympathetically rebacked with a new spine, retaining the original endpapers. Extensively provenanced: 'Ch: Parry 1742' on the front pastedown looks to be the earliest owner followed by 'Will.m Wilson' who has inscribed the title page; 'J. D. Wortley 1826' on the first flyleaf and the 20th century bookplate of 'James Fagan Scharnberg' (author of Beagling and Bassetting) opposite. One of the early owners has hand numbered the five plates - the engraved title page, a spectacular foldout plate devoted to hunting, and three further fold-out plates, generally in very good condition and preceding the relevant section of text: these are a little browned with the fowling plate showing a closed tear along its fold and fraying along the outer edge; old paper repair to verso. A contributor's copy of this rare periodical published by Glasgow School of Art at the peak of its influence and success, which contains analysis of its iconic home designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Olive cloth binding with gilt spine lettering and speckled red edges. Title page with finely executed vignette by Thomas Callendar Campbell-Mackie (later Head of School of Design at Glasgow School of Art) First 4 issues through-paginated to page 114; then Vol 5, pp40; Vol 6, pp36; Vol 7 pp40; Vol8 pp36. London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1976. Hardcover. Near Fine. Extensively extra-illustrated with Huxleyan ephemera and letters. Three letters from Elspeth Huxley to Valerie Ryshworth Hill in Portugal are mounted on early pages, dating from 1977, the first of which describes the recent death of Huxley's mother, Nellie Grant at a great age. The third letter acknowledges the gift of a bookplate designed by Ryshworth Hill (an example tipped in opposite the letter) for 'Elspeth Huxley's Mother's Library in the Algarve (Design by V.R.H.)'. First edition 1936, very good in green cloth, covers dented, rubbed and water marked to one corner, a few spots and stains to the pages. Ownership inscription of Mary Eyre Wallis. This book comes from the collection of the scientist and pioneer birth-control campaigner Marie Stopes (1880-1958) which was inherited by her son the philosopher Harry Stopes Roe (1924-2014) and sold following the death of his widow Mary Stopes Roe in May of this year. pp 174 The first edition of Alex Martin's first novel, a comedy of Anglo-Italian misunderstandings, inscribed by the author to British cartoonist John Ryan "For John and Priscilla - Most affectionately, Alex Martin Rye 14th April 1991". Near fine in tan cloth, in a near fine dust jacket, very lightly soiled and creased along the top edge. John Ryan (1921–2009) was a British animator and cartoonist, best remembered for his character Captain Pugwash which began as a comic strip which spawned books and a TV series animated by Ryan. London: William Pickering; John Bowyer Nichols and Son, 1834. Mathematics. Very Good. Five bound volumes of book and publishers' advertisements issued with The Gentleman's Magazine, 1834-1843. The advertisements are found inside the relevant pink card wrappers for each magazine starting with Vol 1, No 1 dated January 1834, 24 issues in each bound volume. Quarter parchment over green cloth, stab sewn binding, very good, spines worn but the bindings are firm, wrapper edges creased and nicked with handling. The magazines appear to have belonged to J Turner Esq, occasional annotations throughout. Withdrawn stamp over the bookplate of the Yorkshire Archaeological and Topographical Association to each front pastedown.
