Description:
London: B. Moss, 1852. Aquatint, coloured by hand, by James Pollard. A fine quality image, engraved by James Pollard from his own drawing. Re-issue of a plate first published by T. Helme in 1831 and depicting the famous sportsman George Osbaldeston (1787-1866), "at the Newmarket Houghton meeting [of 1831, where] he performed an extraordinary feat. He undertook to ride two hundred miles in ten consecutive hours for a bet of a thousand guineas, the number and choice of horses being unlimited. He divided the distance to be covered into heats of four miles each, changing his horse at the conclusion of each heat, and he accomplished his task one hour and eighteen minutes within the time specified, having ridden, allowing for stoppages, at the rate of twenty-six miles an hour." (DNB). James Pollard was the youngest son of the London engraver and print-seller Robert Pollard. He began work at the age of fifteen as a painter but quickly turned to engraving as well. In the 1820s his coaching scenes became… Read More

Description:
New York: G.W. & C.B. Colton, 1869. Folding pocket map, full period hand-colouring, ornamental border. Census table at lower right. Folds into publisher's blindstamped cloth covers, title stamped in gilt on the upper cover, Colton ad on the front pastedown. Colton pocket map of Iowa. Iowa experienced explosive growth during the 1860s, largely as a result of the rapid development of the state's railroad system. At the beginning of the decade, Iowa's few railroads were entirely confined to the eastern one-third of the state. By the time Colton published this fine map in 1869, several lines had pushed to its western border, including the Mississippi & Missouri Railroad, which joined the transcontinental railroad at Council Bluffs. This map is similar to another one published by the Coltons in the same period, though smaller and without the "sectional" divisions. Rumsey 0180 (1855 issue); Phillips, A List of Maps of America, p. 337 (1862 issue).

Description:
Paris: [Mabileau & Co.], 1903. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition. The pass for the lead made by Gabriel over the very recognizable "Shovel-nose". Mors, the driver behind Gabriel, had limited success in these races, this 70 horse power chain-driven car being the exception. There is some confusion as to the actual number on the car during this race, with some records indicating #6 rather than #168 as shown. This was Fernand Gabriel's only win in a career that lasted until 1923. He was killed during an RAF air raid on Paris in 1943. The 1903 Paris-Madrid race is infamous in racing history. The cars were extremely well-powered for the time, though not as well-endowed with breaking power. The speculators crowded the route for the race, and casualties resulted. Other oddities included one car whose transmission became stuck in reverse and was driven that way for 25 miles. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat… Read More

Amsterdam and New York: Johnson Reprint Corporation and Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1971. Colour-printed lithograph, on fine hand-made paper. Excellent condition. Image size: 17 x 23 3/4 inches. Sheet size: 26 1/2 x 39 1/2 inches (approx). [Pl. 348]. In October 1971, employing the most faithful printing method available, the best materials and the ablest craftsmen of their age, the Amsterdam firm of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd., in conjunction with the Johnson Reprint Corporation of New York, set out to produce the finest possible limited edition facsimile of the greatest bird book ever printed: the Havell edition of John James Audubon's well-loved "Birds of America". The Curators of the Teyler's Museum in Haarlem, Holland made their copy of the original work available for use as a model. The Museum, founded in 1778, bought their copy through Audubon's son as part of the original subscription in 1839. Description:
New York: Published for the Author, Daniel Giraud Elliot, 1872. Hand-coloured lithograph after Joseph Wolf by J. Smit and J.G. Keulmans, printed by P.W.M. Trap. Very good condition. A beautiful image from the most splendid of Elliot's great monographs, 'A Monograph of the Phasianidae or Family of the Pheasants'. The magnificent size and beautiful colouring of the plates after Joseph Wolf's charcoal drawings reflect the importance which Elliot attached to the Phasianidae. Of all the families in the ornithological system, he regarded it as the one most vital to the human race, "containing within it the species that afford food for thousands of mankind, and also those which are the original source of all the domestic poultry met with throughout the civilized world." Washington D.C.: Published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1921. Nautical chart printed on heavy paper stock. Colored. A rare original coastal survey of Galveston area coastline encompassing the city of Galveston, Galveston Bay, Pelican Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula home to Crystal Beach. Established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807 as the Survey of the Coast, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was the United States' first civilian scientific agency. This agency has followed its mission to survey the U.S. coastline, create nautical charts of the coast, and help increase maritime safety since its founding, and has often played fascinating roles in significant chapters of U.S. history. It served in all theaters of the Civil War in the service of the Union Army and Navy, pioneered acoustic exploration in the wake of the sinking of the Titanic, and during WWI it worked to detect enemy submarines. In addition, this agency worked to survey and produce detailed maps and renderings… Read More

Description:
London: Published by T. McLean, 1857. Hand-coloured lithograph. Image size: 15 1/8 x 11 13/16 inches. Published in 1857, The Gardens of England is a series of 24 plates with accompanying text depicting the diverse luxuriant gardens of various distinguished English mansions. The mid-nineteenth century was a period during which the traditional aesthetics of garden design underwent a significant change in England, as innovative ideas and concepts were being continually introduced and explored. Brooke's publication embodies the eclectic nature of Victorian garden design and constitutes an important visual survey of the varied styles that were popular among the wealthy and fashionable. This handsome terraced garden was built on the property of Castle Combe, a medieval fortress in northwest Wiltshire. Little is known about E. Adveno Brooke, other than that he exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution between 1853 and 1864 and his most significant publication was The Gardens of England. Cf.… Read More

Simla: Army Press, 1900. 8vo. (9 5/8 x 6 5/16 inches). 9, ii, 285pp. Original cloth-backed card covers. A rare home gardening manual, published for the use of the British army and families in India. An informational manual on how to grow fruits, flowers, and vegetables in India, designed for beginners and amateurs to use. It is organized like a glossary, with headings in alphabetical order and descriptions and explanations beneath, including discussions on how to lay out a kitchen garden, how to use a lime, the use of bones as a phosphatic manure, the benefits of charcoal for soil, dealing with pests, descriptions of various flowers, and more. "Many famous books have been written from time to time on the subject of gardening in India, but from an amateur's point of view the chief drawback in most of these is that they are either too sketchy to be of real practical value to the beginner or, on the other hand, are burdened with a superfluity of technical complexities which though perhaps desirable… Read More

London: Published by John Boydell at the Globe near Durham Yard in the Strand, 1750. Engraving with hand-colour. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of a small crease on right margin. Image size: 12 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches. A striking view of Gaunant Mawr Waterfall in Northern Wales, from Boydell's series of plates "Collection of One Hundred Views in England and Wales." Towards the middle of the eighteenth century, a trend developed among English artists and printmakers who sought to record visually the natural beauty of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those armchair travellers who… Read More

With this in mind they turned to the 'extensive collections of Diurnal Lepidoptera in the British Museum ... one of the finest ever formed, and still increasing rapidly.' [London: Day & Son, 1849. Tinted lithograph by Louis Haghe, with later professional hand-colouring. Very good condition apart from a small loss in the top margin. A fine example from David Roberts' monumental works on the Middle East: 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia', considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. Roberts' masterpiece was issued in 41 parts over seven years. It is beautifully lithographed by Louis Haghe, to whom Roberts paid tribute in glowing terms, `Haghe has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple and unlaboured, with a masterly vigour and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone'. Abbey regarded the work as `one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and...the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph'.
