Front hinge just beginning to show tenderness. GOOD with shelf and handling wear. See BAL 7149. Also, regarding this novel in his biography of Harris (Athens, 1987), R. Bruce Bickley, Jr., writes "Harris's dialect portraits in Gabriel Tolliver are brilliant, but the real strength of his Reconstruction tale lies in his depiction of the restlessness, uneasiness, and strange silence pervasive among the blacks who are trying to come to grips with their new freedom after the war (141)."

Removed from a bound volume with scuffing at spine and binding cord exposed, octavo, pp. 36. A one inch vertical tear with no loss from top edge of title page downward, near spine. About GOOD condition with an old Maine ownership stamp on front wrapper near bottom, and an old shelf scratch and small hole on rear wrapper. Many of the page tips are bumped and curled slightly. Clean and unmarked internally.

Wrappers are POOR condition, tattered across the decades, with soiling, nicks, erosion of paper at spine ends, and loss of paper at tips. A hole near top edge of upper panel. Previous owner name on front panel. Internally, about GOOD condition with shelf and handling wear and some light foxing. A useful study and research tool, withal.

Examining the title page, we find the beginnings of hinge tenderness in the gutter. Light spotting near fore-edge of Dedication page and Table of Contents page. Dust jacket FAIR-only, as well, with significant chipping, short tears, and loss of paper at foot of spine. Jacket now protected from further wear by a new sheet of removable Brodart. In 2006, a previous owner printed a two-page article about Coulter from an online encyclopedia, and that article is folded and laid in near the rear of the book.

Publisher's original pictorial blue wrappers, octavo, pp. iii, 149. Small "Council of the Synod of Georgia" stamp near bottom of title page, and previous owner has bracketed one name from a list on page 128. GOOD condition with shelf rubbing on spine and mild generalized consultation wear.

Sketch Map of Gloucestershire. Spine ends and board tips with shelf wear. Bottom rear board tip bumped. Cloth is puckered on rear panel near bottom edge. Scattered foxing throughout. Previous owner has made an amusing declaration in pencil on free front endpaper, to wit: "This is Jessie's book because Edith gave it to her." Boards bowed slightly due to book's being shelved at a bit of an angle.

Publisher's tan cloth with matching spine lettering on a black background, quarto, pp. xxii, 186 plus colophon. Frontispiece and other illustrations. Foreword by James J. Waring. Preface by William J. Kerr. Some foxing first few leaves. Previous owner, a deceased physician from Georgia, applied a coat of shellac to the exterior of the book, giving it a bit of a shiny appearance. That same physician's tasteful book plate and date (April 1956) on front paste down. About Very Good with no jacket.

Publisher's stapled illustrated wrappers, pagination [2] + 3-46 + [2]. No date of publication cited, but circa 1985. Measures 7 1/4 inches in height x 5 1/2 inches in width. Includes several sample menu ideas for Gone With the Wind parties. Just very light shelf wear. Please note that some of the vignettes used as Chapter Headings are in black face.
